OK Gang, talk me into doing it myself. I got my new slip ons yesterday. B & E performance with the 2 inch baffles. What tips, tricks or experiences can you share to make my slip on swap easier. Any special tools needed, or does one make it easier than the other? I've never done this before, have the service manual and am quite sure I can master this one.....I think.... ....talk me into it
One of the easiest mods you could do. Simply loosen the clamp at the header and remove the 2 screws holding the rear of the exhaust on the saddlebag supports. grab the muffler and pull, shake, rotate til it comes off. reverse process to install.
Like Shagnasty said.... pull, twist, yank, wiggle up and down, left to right, tug until the thing comes off. New one goes on easier than the old one comes off. I put the two hole bracket on sideways to have a handle for pulling. Seem to remember the right side was harder than the left side. Go for it.... you'll be glad you did it when it's done.
Get you tube of Permatex Ultra Copper Maximum Temperature RTV Silicone. Some replace there clamps with new ones.
+1 on the Ultra Copper RTV. I would also recommend using some penetrating oil to aid in the removal of the old mufflers. Be prepared. Both could come off easy, one could be easy while the other is difficult, or both could be a major pain in the ****. I have used the old clamps over with no problem and the RTV will help eliminate any of those pesky small exhaust leaks. It's nothing you can't handle and you'll save money and get some satisfaction from doing it yourself.
You will need a ft./lbs. torque wrench and some sockets. It's really easy job. On my superglide the hard part was getting the old mufflers off. Took 15 or 20 minutes to wiggle that one off but may be easier for you. You'll be proud of yourself once your done. Then your confidence will grow enough to take on a handlebar or grip change maybe.
