Default Cam Swap Noise

I posted this in the Dyna section. I also posted here since I know there have been many upgrades done on the touring bikes....

Over the weekend I finished up doing a cam swap on one of my buddy's bike. He's got an 01 Wide Glide and we went with the entire swap over - Andrews 26N cams, Torrington inner bearings, updated Harley cam support with oil pump, hydraulic tensioners, roller chains, Harley "B" lifters, SE EZ-Install pushrods, S&S standard rockers and new shafts, etc.

Bike fired up great and ran outstanding. My buddy was extremely pleased however when he came back from the test ride he mentioned that he heard a "different" kind of noise. I listened to it in the shop with the bike idling and to me it has a soft "whooshing" type sound. I then used both a static and amplified stethoscope to double check and it's coming from the cam cover area. No tapping at all.

My speculation is the noise difference is from changing out from the stock "silent chain" and old spring tensioners to the new style roller chain and hydraulic tensioners. Can anyone validate this or noticed the same type thing when you did the cam support upgrade??

Thanks much,
Brian

The new style cams definately have a whooshing sound coming from the cam chest. I've had two bone stock 08's and both had it off the showroom. Really, you can't hear it when riding. If you can then maybe you got something else.

I just replaced my OEM cams with Andrews 37H, Torrington bearings and used the OEM cam plate with a new chain. Little more noise than stock, definitely 'different' but no more than I expected. If everythings tight and sounds ok, Ride like you stole it!

Thanks guys...

That's exactly what I was thinking and told him in that direction. Based on what he said the noise never changes at highway speeds and can't really hear it.

MIke, did you buy the inner bearing puller from George's garage or did you go with the cheap-o blind spot puller from HF or somewhere else?

sorry, I misunderstood your post. Just wondering about the effectivness of the autozone/HF puller. I think I'm just going to go ahead and order it from HF.
