I have never had the exact problem as is described in this thread but i can tell you that i have never had a bike that starts quite like this one. Its really wierd, it acts like the starter isnt strong enough or something. Sometimes when i hit the starter it really struggles to turn her over and other times it is ok. Im guessing it is all to do with the acr. I have never owned a bike with this feature so maybe it is just the nature of the beast as she has always started. I guess its all about the high compression and large displacement of this engine. She sure does rip for a big girl!!
My brother has a 07 ultra we were oon a trip from Calif to Zion park Utah and it happened on his bike. It would start after a few trys but being so far from home
we were worried. After we got home he was at the dealer and stared the bike
a mechanic was watching and the starter moved. The starter bolts were loose
and the starter was not grounded good. this was the problem.

"this one" is a Ltd, right? Do you hear a clunking noise at startup? I always figured it was the ACR's but maybe my starter is loose or something else is going on.
Yes it is a ltd, and yes i do hear a "clunking, maybe even a knocking sound sometimes on start-up. Again im guessing it has something to do with the acr.
My guess is a ground issue on the starter solenoid/relay. My brothers Ultra did same thing. Dealer couldn't figure it out. We looked into it and found the ground connection on start relay was loose. Has worked great ever since
Yes, my problem was that when I started it in gear I did not know the clutch handle had to touch the grip. If it didn't there is a switch that will open the circuit if not fully depressed. and the bike won't activate the starter

The last time I had the problem, I was trying to start it in gear. I had the clutch pulled and I can ALMOST swear I had it pulled right back to the grip - ALMOST. Anyway, that's when I dropped it off at the dealer last weekend to check it out. Called them a couple days ago and (surprise, surprise) they couldn't get the problem to re-occur.
Anyway, guess I'll just keep riding it until it finally doesn't start at all and hope that doesn't happen when I'm in the middle of nowhere. Got a trip planned for the week after next.
The service manager at the dealer pulled the start switch housing apart and checked for pinched wires. He would start it every day and (of course) it always started.
Anyway, I was in Cherryville, BC on Saturday and I decided it was time to check my tire pressures. My bike was loaded and it took a while to pull off a bag to check the rear so I had the ignition switch on Acc. while I listened to the tunes. When I was ready to go, I got on my bike and flipped the ign. switch back to ignition and flipped my kill switch to run. The bike was in gear and I had the clutch pulled.
I hit the start button with NO result.
I pulled the clutch lever all the way to the grip a couple times and held it there. Hit the start button again with no result.
I put the bike in neutral and pulled the clutch to the grip again and held it there. Hit the start button again with no result.
I toggled ignition switch off and on a couple times. Then I toggled the kill switch a couple times. Hit the start button and it started up.
I finished my trip (about another 900 miles) without it happening again.
When I got back to PG, I re-read this thread and took it back to the dealer. The service mgr and I took the seat and side covers off and checked all the connections you guys have suggested including the starter bolts. Everything seemed tight and no codes are showing.
Please keep me up to date if anyone hears anything more on this.
Anyway, guess I'll just keep riding it until it finally doesn't start at all and hope that doesn't happen when I'm in the middle of nowhere. Got a trip planned for the week after next.
