Chief,
If harley can't make an air temperature gauge that works, what makes you think your oil temp guage is any different? They both use the same technology. Personaly, I want to know air temperature. I tour every chance I get, and it is interesting to know how hot is hot when riding across S. Nevada in the summer. More importantly, it is useful to know if temperature is approaching 32F when crossing a Rocky Mountain pass on a wet day. I'm going to tinker with my ATG when I get time, and see if I can make it work. If not, I am going to complain to harley until, hopefuly, they fix it or replace it under warranty with something I can use. Not a another defective temp gauge, but a Compass!
Tom
Gotta remember that HD didn't make the gauge, they bought it from the low bidder! If you want an accurate gauge for this application and are tired of the HD gauge, measure the diameter and the length of the tube and bulb. Check with one of the industrial supply joints in your area and see what they can order for your application. Various grades of gauges are available from several manufacturers. But make sure you're ready for the sticker shock 'cause a good gauge ain't cheap.
BTW, the oil gauges on most cars and bikes aren't accurate, unless you just flat out get lucky. I calibrate gauges and mess around with co-workers stuff. Very seldom find an accurate gauge, and even fewer that are linear over the range of the dial.
Talked with my dealer today. They said they have had some success by relocating the sensing element elsewhere in the fairing. Overall- how accurate do you want to be? For me- we just ordered the Oil Temp Kit from the link above!
Just put in my oil temp gauge from Rodger Mcewan. Its the spun aluminum one like on the SE. VERY close to OEM. I understand that the stock one is an exact match. I replaced the volt gauge and put it where that usless OAT gauge was. Better to have both oil temp and pressure together I figured. Made a few jumps and didn't need to cut any wires. I can post some pics if anyones interested.
You can get the stock and white faced style from Wally's Cycle WorldOil temp gauge
For the spun SE style you need to call Rodger direct. 915-736-4421
It's almost scary how exact the match is. You would never know the gage is aftermarket unless you read the very small print at the bottom of the gage (Tastefully done in identical red which mormally reads Harley Davidson).
I'm with Tom, I want to know ambient air temp. The question still remains, does anyone know if there is an adjustment one can make before I remove the gauge? It is consistently 15-20 degrees too high, even higher on hot days. Come on Harley, pay attention to the details instead of concentrating on more accessories to make more money off us owners.
