My '010 Ultra makes different noises mentioned in three of the posts here. Through previous threads here, I've been told that the mostly likely source is the primary chain, that it is too loose. Will be taking mine in to find out for myself.
The noises may be 'normal' according to H-D, but they sound anything but normal, and sure makes my $25k bike like some abused clapped-out rat bike when using the clutch.
Hmm. What I was thinking was if the clutch was adjusted loose, the shaft that connects to the release plate could have been rattling against the ramp in the clutch release cover. The shaft is under no tension when the clutch is released. I was thinking gravity would slide the shaft to the left side of the engine and eliminate the noise. Might want to try adjusting the clutch anyway. I all but eliminated the click by turning the adjuster screw out 1/2 a turn after seating it. Manual recommends 1/2 to 1 full turn.
I have a 2010 UC FFSE w/1200 miles on it. After the 1000 mi. service I began noticing a loud noise each time I released my clutch and sometimes when I engaged it. The noise is not when switching gears, but when in 1st gear releasing the clutch, like when you start out or are moving ahead in your garage. I think I am starting to hear it between 1st and 2nd as well. It is also not a violent noise but it is a noise that does not seem normal. I took it to my dealership and was after a few mechanichs listened to the sound I was told it is normal. They felt it was the gears engaging and not to be concerned. My question is why did this start after the 1000 mi service? I then took it to another dealership and was immediatly told this is normal. I have a friend with a 2010 and a lot of friends with older bike and none of them have this noise or believe it is normal. Any suggestions? I know I have a 2 year warranty so maybe I just sit and wait.
Thanks in advance.
My 2010 RGC does the exact same thing since the day I brought it home. I noticed it when I pulled into my driveway bringing it from the dealer. This is my 6th Harley and none of my others ever made this noise. I've taken it to 2 dealers and both said it was normal but at the same time said it didn't sound right. The first dealer tore into the primary and couldn't find anything wrong. The 2nd dealer installed a SE compensator (under warranty) and it still did it. I now have 5,400 miles on my bike and the noise is almost gone or I seldom hear it. I did an up to 30 mph in 1st gear then slam on the rear brake only (short of locking up the rear wheel), pulling the clutch in at the last minute, and that seemed to help eliminate the noise more than anything. Supposedly that adjusts the primary chain. The rattling sound when in neutral but stopping when I pulled the clutch in was eliminated when they installed the SE Compensator. I've heard now that there is a bulletin that tells dealers to replace the stock compensator (if it goes bad) with an SE at no charge. A friend of mine with an '08 EGC had the same problem but was eliminated when his compensator went bad and they replaced it with an SE at 'no charge'.

I 2nd the 1/2 turn out. I do my own service and adjusted my adjuster 1/2 turn out and that may be another reason my noise is all but gone.
I called 11 dealers all over the U. S. from Bartlett's to Mike's Famous, every Service rep or tech I talked to said this is not "normal" after 1,000 mile service. I told them, " I accelerate in first and when I pull the clutch in I get a 'clank'. It didn't happen once in 1250 miles, then they adjusted the clutch and bingo! It sounds like crap."
One guy said it might be compensator, but said he would have someone else adjust the clutch to make sure it wasn't an adjustment problem.
I'll take it back to the dealer and give them one more shot, but I don't like them tryin to snow me by sayin it's "normal" when every other service manager and tech I talked to all over the damn country said it's not.
Thank ya all for your responses, and tryin to work this out.

If it's normal why didin't it do it before? And why don't all of them do it? The only reason the service tech says it's normal is because they don't know how to fix it. The first time I took mine in I was told 'it's normal'. Then the svc manager heard it and said 'that doesn't sound right'. After checking everything in the primary the svc mgr told me they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I noticed on the repair invoice it said, 'couldn't duplicate problem'. I can get that kind of service from the little old lady that lives across the street.
Well, it looks like I have to eat a little crow! My service mgr. told me that I wasn't totally backing off the throttle when it was makin the clunk. I told him, that was nit pickin, it still shouldn't be makin this noise. He explained it to me and I went and tried it and every time I totally rolled off the throttle it wouldn't make the noise. When I didn't totally shut off it always made the noise. He said it wasn't good for the clutch not to shut it off the whole way. I told him I always shift like that, 'sides, everyone likes to grab a gear now and then. We laughed and I thanked him for his patience, 'cause I was in his face a bit. But, to his credit, he never took offense to my 'tude.
I think when I'm out ridin normal I don't wait to go into second gear like I did the night I got it back, in their parking lot. That's why it was so noticeable, I was just takin it real easy and pulled in the clutch lever without shifting right into second gear.
Zoso, give it a try, see what happens with yours.
BTW, I guess you got that mo****r from Led Zep, right?
