I got this one friend who's a retired Motorcycle Cop for 30 years. Been on HD's his whole life. He has a stroked out Ultra to die for and we go everyplace together. He's a real nut job, but he's a good nut job. The kind of guy that would run through a brick wall for ya.
OUT OF THE BLUE....he sends me a picture of a 2010 GL1800 and said he just bought it and traded his Ultra to do it.......I call him and the conversation leads no place because I think he's busting my chops again. Turns out he went down last Saturday and turned in his 05 Ultra for this Wing. I got to say it's a great looking bike but I'm still in 100% shock that he did this.
The best I could understand is: "he said he's getting older" and more and more into Touring long distances and he just fell in love with what he saw and rode and knows it will be a more comfortable enjoyable ride..........
Were gonna ride this Weekend and he tells me he's going to blow my doors off with his 6 cylinder engine......which between us might be true but I'm still a little speachless over him doing this on a whim.
What the heck..he's happy with it and thats what counts I guess.....
He'll be riding his G.E. Hotpoint refrigerator (I mean Honda Goldwing) which doesn't look like a motorcycle, doesn't sound or feel like a motorcycle, you'll benefit from having all the feel, sounds and experiences of riding a "true" bike. I'm sure in time he'll long for what he's missing.
Shouldn't really matter what he chooses to ride. He's your friend right? So who cares! I ride with plenty of guys who own metrics and one in particular rides a GL1800. Truth is they are more luxurious, faster and they handle better too! The Goldwing isn't my cup of tea, but they have a following just as loyal as HD owners I've noticed.
A friend of mine just did the same thing. Another friend went the other way. Everybody is different. I keep trying to like the Wing, but it just isn't my thing.
My Uncle did this a couple of years ago. I bought my Sporty in 2001. He picked up a RKC in 2002, but was never really happy with it.
He traded it for a 2006 Yamaha Royal Star Venture and was really spiteful about Harleys for the past few years.
I added my Ultra to the garage last year and low and behold my uncle picked up a Electra Glide Classic over the winter. He's still pissin' about how the Motor Co. is robbing their customers, but he couldn't stay away from it.
Your friend may go through the same cycle. Honestly the way the metric cruisers are competing makes it tempting.
