Cool Long Ride

Two of us are leaving on June 5th. We're going from Western Maryland to the Pacific in California. One of the things we want to do is ride across the Golden Gate Bridge. What should we avoid (traffic wise) around San Francisco? We've been on one or two long trips but nothing like this. I have a 2010 Limited and the other guy has an 2008 EGUC. We have our route planned out and have been to other parts of the country so I know what to expect out thru Wyoming. The west coast, however, will be a whole new experience.

If you intend to cross the Golden Gate Bridge, there's not much you can do to avoid traffic. You've pretty much got to go through downtown either way you go, and traffic on the north side of the bay can be bad, as it seems to be perpetually under construction. I would try to hit it in the middle of the day. There's no toll going northbound, though I think it's only $5 SB. It is what it is, just take your time and enjoy it.

It's still pretty cool, even for a SoCal boy like myself. 'Course it was too foggy to see a dang thing the first time I went over it. Had to wait a couple years to actually see it.

Study the map. SF is tough. Approach the GG by the Pacific Coast Hwy, which is Hwy 1 on the map (several ways to get to it from diff directions), then come around by the Presidio and thru GG Park (Stay off 19th !!!)
What was stated earlier is true. I live in San Jose (50 mi So-aprox). It can be 95 here and 55 in SF.

Have a fun trip. You'll like 101 which is the hwy you'll be on once you're on the No. side.

Default Ggb

just remember: early morning, even during the summer, the GGB can be quite foggy. try to time getting there later in the day.
and, as someone said earlier, almost no way to avoid traffic. but, hey, at least you won't be stuck in a cage!
have a great & safe trip.

Also on the north side up on the hill there is a lot of good spots to park and just sit back and take in the bridge and the city. Then tackle the traffic. I would suggest coming from the north then hit the city. Just my 2 cents though
