Yes, if you are planning on putting them somewhere hot!

I used that trick when I did cam bearings on my 88" twin cam. Worked just fine.

An old trick, when i was going to school to become a mechanic, we was boring Valve guides out of Ford 302 heads and putting in new guides..the bore was so tight it was impossible to get them in, except for one small little thing...Freon, we froze the new guides with freon from the hose for a few seconds, and then pressed them in quickly...yep, way before the tree huggers and Global warming nuts come out.
Im not sure but i think the new refridgerant will work the same way..Wal Mart, buy a can or two of R22? with the little hose and give it a shot....inside your garage away from prying eyes.

We used dry ice and alcohol (-40F) to shrink fit parts in the airline industry.

I was just looking through the thread to see if anyone else used dry ice. Really gives you shrinkage!

That will work but besides the fumes that will make you sick. If I got caught doing that I would be facing a $25,000 to $50,000 in fines as I am certified and licsened to handle refrigerent. But Nitrogen works just fine as well it will snap freeze what ever you use it on.

If you use nitrogen don't you risk cracking the bearing race due to it's hardness?

I get the cold part of all the suggestions. I don't get the heat part. Make metal cold it contracts in "all" directions. OD will get smaller ID will get larger as it contracts back on itself. Heat metal and it expands in "all" directions. OD gets larger and ID will get smaller as it expands outwards which is to the center. You would need to use cold on both bearing and hub. Try it yourself. Take a flat washer and a pair of calipers or a set of mics. Measure washer at room temp then after a time in the freezer, then heat it up with a blue tip wrench and measure again. The key is metal expands or contracts equally in "all" directions.

Nate

PS Personally found it much easier to spend $100 on e-bay and bought a bearing installer remover tool. Came with 3 collets to remove 3/4", 1" and 25mm ID bearings. Long allthread and 2 more collets that fit the bearing 1 on each side and install both at same time. I provide the right size wrenches and some elbow grease, and can remove bearings 1 at a time in about 15 mins. Install both in about the same time. No muss no fuss. Well worth the bucks.

e-bay link to tool http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HARLE...33626868070734 OK $113 with S&H.
