So, if the oil gets too hot, finish the ride but change out the oil?
By the way, that "States" map shows the states I rode through on this last ride.

The oil in my bikes has never gotten over 240 -- yet. I usually run a synthetic blend so I assume the oil won't break down till the 270-280 degree range. I just got an oil cooler (H-D) from Zanotti's so I'll see how it works on the Deluxe before buying two more. I think the H-D motors are pretty tough but 300 degree oil temp would scare the crap out of me -- yes, I'd probably change the oil after that.

If I lived somewhere with cooler summers I'd probably forgo the oil cooler(s). But sitting in traffic when it's 112 degrees can be kind of brutal.

That's an impressive ride. How many miles and how long did it take you?

I heard something similar, that's why I use synthetic and at 300 degrees, I shut her down.

I have a 2008 FLTRI with lowers and an oil cooler installed. I have the temperature dipstick and typically see oil temperatures around 200-210 degrees F max.

As someone already noted, these numbers need some other info, like: ambient temp? stop and go in traffic? toodling along in the countryside at 55 MPH? 85 MPH on the superslab? My engine temps vary from 190 to 230, depending on conditions. Even with an oil cooler, the oil temp will rise if it's 115 degrees and sitting in traffic -- I'm sure I would see oil temps 250+ under extreme conditions.

Bill, you are truly a biker! That's one heck of a trip. Compared to you, I'm just a guy who happens to own a couple of Harleys.

Being retired really helps. I think I'll go with LoCoNoco's plan, if it get's crazy hot shut her down and let her cool. Then do an oil change at the next opportunity.

Oil temp was installed at 6k and with temps in the 60s the bike would take 20 miles to reach 180. This was the norm.
In stop & go traffic in KC, MO last September, she spiked right up to 245 or better and it took a bit of fast running
to bring her back down.
The bike now has 21k and I think the readings are pretty much normal for the air temps in which we were riding.
My point is, of what use is oil temp knowledge if the bike is going to continue to be ridden with low or high readings?
Wild Bill the last sentence in your reply really is the essence of all this aftermarket mania! Even without being able to answer your question I just spent $120 on a JES oil dipstick gauge just so I too could say with first hand knowledge "my oil temp is......: (haven't gotten the gauge yet)!!!!!!!!!
