I rode '02, '04, and '05 RK's at work. On the '02 and '04 bikes I had 35 - 40 miles once the light came on. The first time the light came on the '05, I was out of gas and coasting 2 miles later.
On my personal '05, I've only seen the light once...and I immediately stopped for gas.

The low fuel light setting is adjustable. They know how to do it at the dealership.
You guys can tell about where yours is set by how much gas you put in it, after it's came on. On a six gallon tank, if you put in 5.5 gal. that tells you that you had approx. .5 gal. of gas (or approx. 15-18 miles left in that tank).
By the way, a smart question for a newbie to Harleys to be asking!
