Lost mine on the way home from the dealer with less than 100 miles on the bike. I would have taken it off, anyway. The dealer gave me a chrome end cap to cover the shaft and all is good.

How do you downshift with your heal shifter?

That was going to be my question.

Same here. That's one of the set of bolts that needs the Red Loctite.

Yep the trick to keeping it on is 'guodentite' . I dropped 2 of them in one day, the second one less than 60 miles from the dealer that replaced it under warranty. The last and current one, I watched the tech put the torque on it and it started to loosen up a short ways down the road. Luckily I caught it before the bolt backed all the way out. Then put the German torque to it. No problem since. Like was previously stated, some IDIOT HD engineer; 1- bolt in upside down. 2- if it has to be upside down then why not on the inside so the shifter is held in by the front one which has the bolt right.
My '96 softtail has both bolt in from the top.

Took mine off. Lots more room for the size 13 left foot.

Took mine off when I got the bike. Never used it on my Heritage either.

Funny though, because the bolt has to be completely out of it to come off. I'll send you mine if you need one.

Hey SMSgt B, I hope that was on your main bike and not the beautiful new beast your riding.

EXACT same thing happened to me! Okay, not exact, no trooper behind me and I was accelerating from the onramp to the highway...getting the ponies spanked to merge in front of a semi (safely) and when I heeled down to ****** 5th it was gone!!!

Then, I realized that I had an entirely new set of foot position options. got home, took the shifter arm off, bought a little chrome cap for the shaft and I've never looked back!

A couple of years later I bought a Heritage Springer and one of the first things I did before I even rode her home was take the heel shifter off!
