Heading home down the interstate and come to my off ramp. WTF, I go to downshift and the heel shifter and peg are gone. I just hope it didn't hit the highway patrol car that was behind me ... thinking of it, now I know why he backed off earlier; worried something else might fly off.
A lot of bikers are removing thier heel shifter, personally I use mine and don't want to remove it. After hearing of all the shifters falling off I now carry a spare, maybe overkill but what the heck....
I have a stainless wire like a leader for fishing tackle hooked to mine & hooked to the frame. It doesn't get in the way. I check my ride over alot but sometimes crap happens & I have already had it come off once before!

I always used mine also (well until now) ... funny thing was I still tried to use it after it was gone
About 5 or 6 years ago I was cruzing along a rural area in virgina, a good 500 miles or from home (give or take).
When I go to shift my heel goes to the floor board and the toe shifter is so loose its bouncing off the front of the board. Everything had just loosend up and fallen apart.
I get over to the side of the road and my Buddy goes back to take a look for it or find an auto parts or hardware store.
So there I am lying on the ground trying to un wedge and hold things in place with zip ties until I can get to a hardware store and get some nuts and bolts.
Now, I'm talking rural farm country I havn't seen another person or vehical for while until I see this sh*t box Bronco II pull over a hundread yards or so down the road.
This dirty end of a mop gets out and just watchs me for a few minutes then gets back in the Bronco and drives past me real slow watching me.
Did I say sh*t box? This rust bucket was filthy, had a couple of muts in it, I think a seat was missing and it had curtins.
So hillbilly joe drives on past about a hundread yards or so and then just U turns in the middle of the road and comes strait back again.
Now I'm curiouse as to WTF, I this crap right now?
Goober pulls up holds up my heel shifter and say's "hey, is this yours?" .
I was happy of course so I said thanks and put my hand out.
But this guy shoots me a look likelike "F-U" It was his shinny thing. He found it and he wasn't giving it up easy. It was like he had just found and lost a gold bar or something.
I'd have given him something but didn't want to pull out my wallet infront of him.
He just handed it over and left.
Just as I got it all back together and held it on with a vise grip my Buddy pulls back up bumed out he didn't find my shifter. I point down at the make shift repair and he's like WTF?
I just said "Later" Right now lets get out of here while we can. lol..........
Bought my new 09 Ultra, left dealership, got 200 miles down the road stopped for gas and it was gone. Must be part of the dealer set up or inspection. Then they wonder why we get upset. Good luck
You'll notice that the bolt for the heel shifter is upside down. My wife lost her Ultra heel shifter a few years back due to the bolt coming loose and backing out. So, I put in a longer bolt with a chrome acorn nut on the top side and tightened everything down. No more problem. I repositioned the heel shifter on my 2008 RG but by insuring that the "upside down" bolt was very tight, I have had no problems.
I have had my heel shifter come loose and slip and catch on the floor board then I couldn't up shift. Can't get it tight enough all it does is rattle and slip so I took it off.
