I'm approaching ~9,500 miles on my '09 FLTR and it seems to be acting a little wierd these days. While it starts, idles & runs well, the engine seems a bit "fragile" when leaving from a stop. Unless I give it just enough gas, it seems to stall fairly easily. It stalled for me in stop-n-go traffic this morning. Then at a light, the light turned green and I went to go, it almost stalled, I tweaked the throttle, it coughed and a BIG puff of black smoke came from beneath the aircleaner! It didn't stall - just came close. The idle was a little shaky right after this, but I got where I was going. Now I hope I can get home this afternoon.
I was going to do the 10K maintenance and check things out, but wonder what the hell's going on. FYI - I've got a stage I upgrade (Bub7 TDs, Big Sucker, and a PCV), otherwise stock. Any thoughts???
I think it is the heat management system coming into play. I had a PC V on my 09 RG and the same thing happened as the weather warmed and I was in some traffic. Jamie sent me a map that ran a little richer and suggested I rev it up a bit to get both cylinders firing before moving. This is my opinion as to what is happening, could be wrong but is sounds very familiar....Good Luck
I had similar issues when the heat management system was active (black smoke from air cleaner, trying to die at take off). I just turned off the heat management, but I am interested in what others have done to combat the problem.
I've been talking (e-mail) with Jamie to fine-tune the map he put into the PCV, as I'm getting a little popping on deceleration (no popping when I just rev the engine). I need to send him my map and he said he's adjust it. Maybe this is playing into it???
I don't know ANYTHING about the "heat management system". Honestly, I've never even heard of it! What is it and what (if anything) should be done to deal with it?
how are the plugs looking..mine was doing the same..had a bad plug.
I haven't done anything yet (other than experience what I described....and worry about it!). I'll pull the plugs & give'em a look when I do the 10K service.
Like some of these guys, unless I pay attention, when the heat management is on, I sometimes almost kill the bike before taking off from a light. I've just learned to blip the throttle before I take off when the back jug's shut down.
I agree its the heat management. It happened to me a couple times. You can barely tell when it kicks in. I also blip the throttle to get both cylinders firing before taking off in traffic when it's activated.
