It is a PITA for sure. I cant remember but I think they are tack welded. I drilled the ends open and used the drill bit to pound the rod out. Its hard to believe how long it took to change that little spring...

Changed one at the shop last week. I just pulled the rod out with a small pair of needle nose pliers. Moved the spring to one side, grabbed it and it moved about a 1/4 of an inch. Repeated several times until it was out enough to grab it from the end.

One end of the hinge is open with a crimp to secure the rod. If the rod won't come out using needle nose pliers at the spring, you need to open the criimp end using a flat-blade screwdriver. The rod can then be moved using the needle nose pliers at the spring until the end clears the crimped end and can be removed by pulling the end.

It's shown at page 2-107 of the 2004 Touring Models SM.

Harleypingman has got it correct. Although I will add that spreading that piece of metal out with a screwing driver can still be a little tough. You might want to wear a pair of leather gloves and have a list of expletives handy to use, cause you will need them.
