when i bought my roadglide, i rode it home from the dealer and turned the radio off. couldn't hear squat with that 'toenail clipping' they used for a stock shield. the first thing i did was to buy the new windsplitter from zanotti's. got here in just a couple of days.
so, i'm still running stock stereo, with stock speakers, and i can hear it fine up to 85+ mph.
now, i'm a little shorter than most, so if you can, try the shield before you buy it. some guys don't like it. for me it works great.
before you go to the expense of doing the conversion, try another shield. it might just save you lots of time, work, and money.
having the fairing so far away from you is one of the best things about the rg. it makes the bike feel more 'expansive' and less cramped. after riding one for even a short period of time is gonna make the sg fairing feel 'in your face'...
Yeah, I wasn't impressed with the Stereo on the RG either, but I never thought I wanted a SG. For $450 or so bucks, I put in a Hogtunes amp and 5x7 speakers, which livened up the stereo on the Highway.
While I have a love/hate relationship with the Road Glide, (both times I almost bought one, I went with the Street Glide instead) I agree with the others.
Try the Windsplitter shield, and a better set of speakers/amp before you go to all the work of changing the fairing.
The stock speakers are crap, and the whole system is underpowered. Anything over half volume and the distortion is just pathetic.
I cant attest to the performance of the Windsplitter for the Road Glide, I know I was VERY impressed with the Batwing version. While others swear by the Klockwerks shields, plenty have just the opposite feeling after trying them, and frankly, I think they look goofy as hell.
The windsplitter Is less radically shaped, and it really flows with the lines of the fairings. If it works as well in the RG version as my batwing version does, I think you might just be happy with it.
I agree with the others that if it is only the stereo that is the issue then upgrade that. It will be alot cheaper and a hell of alot better. I have a custom setup in mine and can hear the music clear at 110.
If you still want to do the change over let me know if you want to do a swap because I have a customer that wants to do the exact opposite and it may work out for you.
okay look it from a different perspective. what's your roadglide that's now been converted to a streetglide, going to be worth. you have a title for a roadglide but cannot sell a roadglide because you now own a streetglide. i own an 08 streetglide, but there's no way i'd even consider a frankenhack if i were looking for a used bike. that's just something to consider. you'd be far better off finding someone who owns a streetglide and wants a roadglide instead and doing a swap. that's about the only sensible solution that i can think of.
