New Cables with ABS??
I am changing the handle bars on a 2010 Street Glide, 2" pull backs. I am told that I will need longer cables, which is fine I had to do this with my 07 SG.
My concerns pop up because of the ABS. The dealer is telling me that it will take 3 or more additional service hours to change the bars because the ABS requires a lot of additional work to reconnect the cable to the ABS unit. I have talked with an independent shop owner who said that is not the case because it is more or less a plug in application to change the cables. I am totally confused here the dealer was very clear about no plug and that the ABS has to be rewired because HD doesn't use an adapter or plug.
One of them is either lying or does know what they are talking about. Can someone tell me for sure.

You'll need new brake lines. The ABS controller is behind the right side cover, so the cables are longer and more expensive than the non-ABS ones, and it takes a little more work to run them. No way it's an additional 3 hours. You will also have to take the bike to a dealer (or an indy with a Digital Technician) to have the brake system bled. You can get pretty close doing a standard bleed, but I was unable to get the last little bit of air out of the system.

thanks there is no way I would try this. I will be taking the bike to a shop. Just trying to decide if it is the dealer or an independent shop. I am just confused with the completely different info I am getting from the dealer and the indy shop.

If the bars are just 2" pull backs, you do not need to change the brake line. Just slightly loosen brake fitting at the bar and rotate it downward some. I did mine and also kept the stock clutch cable by rerouting it on the frame and inside the fairing. I have an 09, so my set up is like yours.

I used the HD Touing Pullback bars and I didn't do anything to the brake line. I also rerouted my clutch cable and ran it inside the fairing. On a later service, they convinced me that the clutch cable was too short and I let them replace it with a longer one. I don't think it was necessary but I got scared that my cable might break. I kept the original one so I have a spare if needed.

shoulod u need a new brake line the abs is very simple to bleed i did mine it does take a little time but it worked. once abs brake line has been replaced u remove the front brake resivor cover. top off your brake fluid and very carefully flick your front brake lever until all air is removed i didnt need to go to harley to reprogam anything. but make sure u cover your tank and front fender so no brake fluid gets on them. this worked good for me with no problems. hope this helps should u decide to do it yourself. this was told to me by a certified harley mechanic.

I'm fixing to tackle the same thing with my ABS system...
The dealer told me that I can get the brakes working and they will be just fine as far as brakes are concerned, that is bleed the brakes accordingly like you would with any other brake line change out...However if you wanted the ABS feature the digital tech would need to be used to completely verify all the air is out of the system...
My service manager stated that if I was to do all the work running the lines it would be 1 hr labor charge to bleed and hook up the digital tech to confirm that the ABS is in deed in operation...

thanks for the info guys and sorry for the late reply. I have been out of pocket for a while. I ended up let the dealer do it. Turned out I did not need all the brake lines replaced, so I got my money back on those. He also knocked off some of the labor time. Had the whole thing done for around $500 parts and labor. Actually ended up cheaper than it did when they changed them on my 07 SG.
