Default Recommend a head porter

Seriously, I got my ebay '06 heads today. Would like a decent, affordable port job. I know that we have one that is a sponsor, and I am not ruling him out. If you have a set of heads that have been massaged by them, please speak up. Looking for real world experiences no he said she said bs. Who did your head work and are you happy with the results?

I've always had Zippers do mine ... 2 shovels and 3 Evo's no problems. Haven't personally sent any twin cams ... but my 2 buds have no complaints.

Hey NoGood....

I have personally had four (4) sets of my own heads ported & polished.

1) I sent a set of brand new S/E heads to Heavy Duty Cycles in Toronto. Donny Petersens shop (he's the tech writer for American Iron). It was about $1k. The work looked to be good and I installed the heads on the first Twin Cam I ever built, my FLHTCI. The motor smoked like crap from the moment I built it. I did use Total Seal gapless rings on it and was afraid there was an issue with the valve seals, so I ordered some Viton seals like the Total Seal folks recommend. I pulled the heads back off the bike, and to my surprise (actually SHOCK), I found that the assembler had used some kind of rubber boot-like seals with a metal retaining clip for valve seals. All four of these rubber boots had been gashed during installation. Evidentlly, they did not have the proper seals and just threw whatever **** they had lying around on them and sent them back. Needless to say, I would NEVER recommend them.

2) I sent a set of heads from my 02 RG to Larry Hardy @ Performance Techniques, in CA. He was AWESOME! He spec'd a build for my bike given my stated goals. For the same $1k, he ported, polished, milled, and installed compression releases. Using his recommendations, I assembeld the build and it was the strongest / fastest Harley (non S&S monster) I have EVER ridden. The only poblem with that bike was that it munched starter clutches.

3) After perusing HDForums, when it came time to build my 05 RG, I called Bean @ BigBoyz and discussed my personal goals on the build this time around. He gladly and thoroughly assisted me. I sent him a set of heads, and he ported, polished, and milled them for ~ $400. The build was AWESOME and results were exactly what he said they would be. 100HP / 100ftlbs tq with flat-top pistons & 9.7:1 CR. It was an awesome build and great in areas I had 92/93 octane fuel. On a recent trip, we went over a week with crummy gas, 89 / 90 octane and I had bad pinging problems. Had to resolve that ~ even at the cost of dyno bragging rights.

4) Called Bean AGAIN and discussed new objectives. Sent him another set of heads and $300 later, I have a milder build (92hp / 94.6ftlbs) with lower CR and it still pulls like a MF!

From my PERSONAL experience, unless you have plenty of disposable $$$, there's no reason to blow it on some "big name" porter when you can get great results for a really reasonable price.

I highly suggest that you just call Bean @ BigBoyz and talk about what ya want & see how you feel about him.

Another cool thing, is that you can watch, via web cam, them actually working YOUR heads!

Let us know what ya decide!

Later,

Phil

their contact info is:
207-621-1001 Days at the Bike Shop
207-621-8089 Eves at the Port Shop

I have always caught him at the port shop in the evenings.... give him a shout...

I had Bob Wright do my heads, cost around a grand included bigger valves etc. He owns R&D Performance in Watertown Minnesota, he works with Mike Roland the designer of Kuryakyn parts. I am very happy with the results.

I used d&c motorworks out of orange park florida because they were recomended by 2 friends and they were local but if you dont have a good shop local I think I would have used the site sponsers im sure they will do you right like the others said just let them know what you want to acomplish and I know the valves are diffrent on the 06' no inner spring, the valves I went with dident offer valves for the 06' set up but they flow better stock because of the smaller stem on the valves may be you could just port the heads and not oversize the intake and still have great performace. But a good shop will lead you in the right direction good luck. I havent had mine tuned yet to know how good mine are but I will get it back soon, but Im definatly runing a lot more air through the motor because its lean now (poping and surging around 2000k)
