I'm planning on installing an SE Compensator on my Ultra to see if it makes the primary a bit quieter. Can anyone tell me if I need any 'special' tools for this job?
You are going to love that compensator. I installed one on mine and there's no more kickback, banging and the takeoff is smoother. There's a lot of threads in this website search on installing the compensator. They recommend a metal bar to lock the gears together but mine came off using an air impact wrench. It barely clears the case but it will come on out. Some of the guys had to grind on the case some. Just be sure to follow the instructions that come with it. It's worth the trouble...!
You guys are treating the symptom not the problem. When I changed my bikes camshaft from that POJ smog cam that comes in them to an aftermarket camshaft the bang was gone, it's been 2 years now and not one bang. I have a friend that did the same thing to his bike and he was amazed because it got rid of the bang on his bike also.
You should weigh the cost/performance differences, for people that are going to do a cam change anyway this is a way to kill 2 birds with one stone.
I used a HeadQuarters cam.
I needed a high speed grinder to open the inside front of the case slightly.
I made a tool from flat stock 1/4" by 1 1/2" mild steel 5 7/8" long with radiused ends.
One 13/16" socket , a torque wrench that will go to 145 ft lbs.
A 1 3/4" open end wrench ( I used a 15" crescent wrench ).
A pretty strong zip tie for the tensioner.
I think it took 38 oz of Harley primary fluid (this is what I used).
A new primary gasket.
Just follow the directions and you'll be fine.
No more starter kick back and much less primary noise altogether.

What's the difference between the SE and whatever is standard? I think if I did mine I would do like Dawg and go to a thirty tooth sprocket and get rid of the tall first gear.

Heavier spring setup on the SE comp. You could go to the 30 tooth, but you would lose the compensator all together. Some say it's not a big deal, and I can't say one way or the other.
Not only will it get rid of the tall first gear, but it will increase your revs in every gear. You already have different/lower gearing on the '09 than the '08 had, so the 30 tooth might give you more revs on the highway than you want. Just something to keep in mind.

This makes no sense, I would be interested in hearing the technical data supporting this opinion.
If anything a cam upgrade will increase the problem, it is a known weak point on bikes that are ridden aggressively, and often seen on upgraded motors. In fact I am in need of replacing mine now and it was fine prior to my cam swap, maybe I just used the wrong cam. Of course I have been known to ride it like I stole it, before and after the big bore upgrade, but with big bore I have much more HP/torque to abuse the compensator.

I have the SE compensator, 30T sprocket, and 134 tooth belt all ready to go on in the fall. I might even do it sooner. I'm hearing that I should see a 15% increase in torque from the sprocket. It will also make 6th much more usable.
