You can actually get away with not replacing the oil. Put a 2x6 under the tires and when the bike is on the jiffy stand you will lose very little oil when taking off the cover. Not sure what year you have, but you will not need to remove the entire exhaust if you have a 09 or newer. Just a long allen to get the cover screws off. Since you bought the kit already wired, you should have no problem with your install. Good luck. I think you will really like them.

If you are up to it, you can do most of the mods to your bike yourself. I can't talk to the Dyno/Sert stuff but I put on a new set of handlebars on my RK for $45.

Basic tool set, Factory manual and parts book, a few specialty tools, and a willingness to learn can save you a lot of money.

Got questions, problems, need help? It's all here.

FWIW,

I was quoted $1150 for a 255 cam install and dyno (super tuner already on bike)

I think your getting ripped off big time.

As for the bars, I have two guys I know, one with an 03, one with an 05 Road King. Both have Heritage bars on them.

I had Heritage bars on my 02 RK. Worked just fine with stock cables and wires. Cost me 80 buck and 1 hour of my time.

I just put new bars on my bike, even did internal wiring (splicing and soldering). It took two of us about 4 hours going slow.

Like everyone else is saying get yourself the service manual, and go for it.

Thanks!! Pistonpuller I haven't used the 2X6 trick yet, but had already read about the method and was going to try it this go round. When I changed the cable on my 01' EGC a few years ago I lost less than a quart. The bike I'm doing this time is an 09' Ultra in my sig pic. Went the pre wired kit route because I understand, the removal of harness' spliceing extentions, and getting the harness back in past the throttle sensor can be tricky, besides the kit won't have the splices in the bars. Just one less weak spot and potential time consuming repair to worry about. Plus everything is already chrome. Thanks again for your input.

Nate

PS I was talking about brake fluid too

Two quick questions:

1. You mention losing less than a quart when changing the cable on a '01 EGC. Isn't there only a quart in the tranny?

2. Has anyone considered draining the tranny into a clean container, replacing the cable/tranny cover and then pouring the same tranny fluid back in?
Just a question.

Thanks for all the replies guys. This is my first Harley, and my first bike. Since I bought it used (a 2002 with 59000 klm, stage 1 done in 2004 with basic HD download), I thought I would take it to the dealer the first time and get a good baseline on the bike, and find out if the whole "Stealership" mentality was true. Will see what the final bill is, and what the bike is like when I get it back, but it is not looking very good for repeat business if it all holds true.
PS prices are CDN dollars, but still!!

I suppose a bit of conflict with my handlebars having heated grips and cruise control? (in terms of using Heritage bars?)
