Red face Mutherfarking clutch! Help me out here!

It's the bike in my sig. Yes, I have a service manual. Yes, I followed the directions to a Tee. Yes, Ive adjusted my evo and other clutches. I am just having he'll with this one for some reason. This is the first time I've adjusted this particular one however. I took it to the dealer for the 1000 mile service and now I plan to do it from here on out. At the 1000 mile service, when I took it in, it got to where it was still pulling with the clutch in at stop lights and it was impossible to get it into neutral. I told them what the deal was and they fixed it. No more problems. Today, I get ready to service it and decide I'll adjust the clutch, then go for a ride and get it nice and warm and then drain all three holes and do a full service before my 500 mile trip I have planned for this weekend. So, I adjust the cluch by first loosening the jam nut on the cable and introducing slack into the cable. Then I loosen the jam nut on the adjuster screw. Then turn the adjuster screw in until lightly seated and back it out a little past 1/2 a turn but not quite a full turn. Then I adjust the cable to about 1/16" at the ferrule. I put the derby cover back on and I'm about to head out to get the fluids warm to drain them. When I put it in gear, I instantly notice the bike is pulling so back on the rack it goes. I start over and same thing again. WTH? I do notice after playing with it, when I lightly seat the adjuster screw, I can lightly seat it, then back out a quarter turn or so and to lightly seat it again, it wil go in about a quarter turn farther than the first place it was lightly seated. What am I doing wrong here???

Clutch has to be dead cold when you adjust it.

hogdoc posted a great explanation here not long ago. Totally collapse the clutch cable. Run in the adjuster screw until the diaphragm spring starts to compress. Then back it off, screw in again until lightly seated, then back out 1/2 - 3/4 turn and tighten lock nut. Adjust cable and go. All of this while everything is cold.

Spin it in between you fingers several times, and it'll settle into one spot. Back it out 1/2 turn and tighten it down. Adjust cable and go. Best done cold as Train said.

I'm going to let It set until this evening and give it another shot. Is lightly seated, just a little before it starts to compress the diaphram spring? Does backing out the adjuster screw more make the clutch engage sooner or does backing it out less do that? I thought more made it engage more?

Sounds like you did it hot. Do it room temp.
Yes, backing it out 3/4 turn will have the clutch grap a bit sooner.
