Actually; I got pretty excited about the Dunlop E3's. I put one on the front of my Softail and the difference was night and day. I immediately changed out the stock tires on my 99' EGS and it was like night and day. I guess I had just gotten use to crappy tires all these years. I take people at their word when they say their Avon or Metzeler tires feel great too but I've only ridden on the Metz and then only for a few miles. They did feel pretty good too.
In the end though; getting 6-12k miles out of a tire isn't cutting it. I hear of people getting 25k out of a touring front tire occasionally. I don't know how they do that. It couldn't happen where I live. Just too dang hot, too much gravel on the roads, and the chip seal they use on the roads just tears up tires.
You plainly haven't looked at a tyre website recently!
The thesis being peddled here that car tyres are state of the art, but bike tyres are twenty years old in design is the sort of nonsense that gives the internet a bad name.
Wow! How cheap is crack on the other side of the pond...What new technology do you have that I'm missing, Hell I'd settle for established automotive technology...Where are our high milage radials or our run-flat tires...you seem to have alot of opinions but nothing based on fact and that my friend is giving the internet a bad name...Oh and I just left Dunlops web page...I saw the pretty pictures of the two bias (twenty year old technology) tires with "new tread designs" for increased traction and durability..Hell it may last 15k miles even
What happens when ya total your bike, for whatever reason, with a car tire mounted on it? Will the insurance pay off, or claim it was the car tire that caused the problem, and kick ya to the curb with no $$$$$$? ..........I'm just betting you will be SOL big time!

Those ?? and more have been asked with no response. Maybe someone with knowledge on the laws that would apply to could answer or maybe check with your state insurance commission? Would like to know the answer to these also.

We've got about 3 threads going on this topic right now and everyone except for one (Progressive) said it wasn't a problem unless the motorcycle was changed to accept it. I don't believe him though. Call for yourself to find out for sure.
How many custom bikes have been built with one-off parts. They are insured. Those bikes are usually expensive to fully insure but probably not the basics plus comprehensive.

I think Those bikes are expencive to insure becaue there expencive to buy.
In the thread you mentioned about insurance, one person said they where told by Progressive no, another said they said yes, so who knows for sure on that one.

From another thread on the subject...Tire needs to be DOT certified and they have to pay...DOT does not certify it to be car or bike just road worthy...Goldwingers and BMW guys have been doing this for years I'm sure that if there was an issue it would be all over the "Darksider" forums.
As usual Harley riders are by no means pioneers here. I'm just surprised that with as many people doing it and swearing by it people are still saying it can't be done...
I've been riding Harleys for almost 40 years. In all that time I have been amazed at the American obsession for mileage over all other characteristics for your tyres. Not being a Yank I don't and never have been blinkered in favour of mileage over comfort, grip and handling, or performance in the wet. I use Avons and prefer them over all others. The motorcycle tyres of today are vastly superior to those of the 60s when I started and I am satisfied most of the tyre brands are developing their products all the time.
As Harley-Davidson said many years ago in their ads of the time: "if I have to explain, you won't understand".

OK we have grip and handling.... They keep jacking the price changing the direction of the treads, making it look different, give the tire a new name and the mileage stays the same???? I have never had a tire fail on me nor had an incident to blame the tire and been riding 15 years on a variety of bikes. No i don't have 40 years of riding experience but about 100k miles under my belt. The touring bike requires no more grip than it currently has in my opinion, it needs durability.
The car tire offers this with handling and i have not heard yet of somebody going down because of a car tire proble...buddy has a run flat on his Gold Wing, tire was flat and ran for not sure how long...It was a Kumho Ecstra run flat and with a hole in it he could barely tell it was flat... he only noticed when he checked his air pressure....it got him to the shop fully loaded before leaving for a trip. He put a bike tire and said it rode pretty much the same but will go back to the car tire.
Yes we "YANKS" want mileage, we are tired of taking it in the rear from tire companies telling us they are doing this and that and still nothing...Enough with the grip....
