2010 Ultra Issues (Long Post)
To recap:
Had the 103 St II kit done on delivery. Dealer parts guy put the package together with V&H Twin Slash Slip Ons and recommended the Stage 1 download.
Right off the bat the bike had extreme heat issues. Even running a country road at 60 with no traffic was like sitting on an oven. Got caught in traffic a couple of times and within 5 minutes of stop and go movement the rear cylinder was shutting off and the bike was pinging like crazy. Took it to the dealer and the tech did a 10 minute test ride followed by a few minutes of idling in the shade. When they checked the temp on the bike it was over 400 degrees. Needless to say they agreed there was a problem. They reached out to Harley who after having them perform a list of diagnostics told them "the bike is within specs. Give him his bike and send him on his way". Unf@#ing believable! Thankfully the dealer disagreed with them and after a lot of wrangling back and forth they agreed to pop for the SESPT, labor and dyno to try and cool the bike down. I decided to get rid of the stock header also and went with a V&H 2 into 1 Pro Pipe.
All the parts came in and they began the tune. Should have realized something was wrong when it took them three days to get to a spot where they thought the bike was tuned. No lie. I was in there and saw them working on it with the dyno for three days. They finally called and said it was good to go. I picked it up and the first 15 miles or so were awesome. I got on a nice lonely highway headed home and started picking up the speed and the bike started to get quirky. Basically anytime it was under a load it would bog down like it was running extremely rich. When I stopped the smell of gas was almost overwhelming. It stalled several times when accelerating from a stop in 1st gear. Called them the dealer the minute I got home and they set me up to come in today at 2pm so they could tweak the tune. After three and a half hours the tech called me back into the service area and said he was giving up for the day. He said every time he would tweak the base map and run it on the dyno the bike would override his settings. If he tried to lean the bike up a bit the bike sensed the leanness and overcompensated by richening the mixture enough to stall it out. If he richened it the bike would go the opposite way and adjust to lean it out to the point of stalling. WTF!
They are thinking it could be three things:
1. The O2 sensors are toast and giving bad data. They are not certain of this since they said they should get an error code if the sensors are bad.
2. The base map is corrupt. The base map they loaded listed my configuration almost to a T.
3. Some other electrical issue that is affecting the bikes ability to interpret the data from the O2 sensors or even accept the tuned map.
They are going to continue working on it next week. I'm at a loss. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Any other ideas of what might be causing it? The dealer has been awesome in trying to make this right with me but it is getting very frustrating. I have had the bike since late May and it has spent more time in the shop than in my possession.
No expert here, but this sounds like a conspiracy. Sounds like the Mo-Co has found a way to prevent tampering. Hmmm !!
I'd aproach it from that angle. Order a new ECM (They come blank) and have it flashed your way. If it's like the modules in the GM cars (same- Delphi) they are a one time program.
I'm sorry, no offense here, but I'm liking my carburetor more & more. Just the heat difference btwn my 00 carb model & my wife's 03 FI (w/Stage 1) is un-believable. Oil temp proves it (03 is 30-50 deg hotter on any given day)
The 09 Street Glide I demo'd (back at the end of 08) was like straddling a white dwarf star, and the rr/cyl kicking out and the pinging when it re-fired . . . please. That's a band-aid at best.
And for what it's worth , that SG did not ride a damn bit better than my Heritage (as far as rr/susp) Handling, yes it was better, more solid and better steering (& brakes) but yeah . . .
I'll stick with carburetors for awhile.
