Default oil temp. gauge install 2005 FLHT

oil temp gauge install
after reading the thread i decided to install the harely gauge # 75265-04A into my 2005 FLHT Standard. running the sensor line no problem. plug adapter, bushing, sending unit no problem. until i attempted to connect the wires into the back of the new oil temp. gauge . straight forward where the yellow wire from the sending unit connects. the black wire goes to the ground post on the back of the new temp gauge. do you have to make a jumper for the orange wire and the 2nd black wire that the instructions call for ? Which plug do you jump the orange and black in to ? the gauge i received has post with ring terminals required not male terminals to plug into. the instructions say connect the 2 black wires and 1 orange wire to the post on the back of the new gauge. which black wire do i connect ? there is a plug with a black and orange wire that is close by it is the plug that goes into the the bulb if i were installing the useless air temp. gauge. i was going to make jumpers to plug into the existing plugs rather than cut any of the harness . any help would be appreciated . thank you

On my '07 the orange wire on the bike's ATG harness is 12V (ignition switched) and the two black wires are common ground--i.e., they connect to each other and ground and either will work. The ATG used two ground wires, one for the guage and another for the light, but the OTG only needs one ground wire. I just made a small harness with the orange wire of the stock ATG harness going to POS on the connector, black going to GND, and the sender wire going to SIG. The sender needs to be grounded somewhere, but you don't need to run the wire under the tank. Instead, just connect it to a good ground preferably somewhere on the frame that connects to bare metal. On my '07 I used an existing ground connection in the cubby-hole forward of the battery under the seat.

For anyone looking for the older Stewart Warner gauges, I have both complete & nearly complete extras of both the early, unlighted SW "Greenline Gauges", (which personally I don't use specifically because they're unlighted, so you can't read the damned things at night), and also the later 1977 SW lighted gauges. The ones I have are the oil pressure, cylinder head temperature, volt meter, ammeter, and oil temperature. I also have both short & long bullet gauge housings with chrome bezels. I don't have all of the interior H-D specific mounting hardware for all of them, but it's not all that difficult to convert the standard brackets to mount the gauges, and I can furnish you with a list of the types & lengths of the screws needed, you can get all the needed fasteners at a good hardware store, ( I say, "a good hardware store" because stores like Home Depot & Lowes always seem to be out of any fasteners I'm seeking), or you can pick them up on Ebay.

There are also sellers on Ebay that sell the various gauges, and the bullet gauge bodies at varying prices. The one thing you'll seem to have trouble with is H-D part # 45030-65A "Handlebar Clamp". If you search around Ebay there are sellers that offer pre-1970 front brake and/or clutch handle sets for about $12.00 w/shipping, the small clamp piece & screws mount right up to part # 74484-68, the other half of the bracket that mounts directly to the gauge body. You can buy the complete handlebar clutch lever assembly from J&P cycles part # 5100060 for $13.99 w/shipping, (replaces oem pt. # 45002-65A). V-twin mfg. has just the small half of the brackets for sale, but I don't know how well they'll match up to the bullet gauge housings, but you can check & decide for yourself.

I think i still have several of the original sending units for the cylinder head temp. gauges, but I'll have to root through my boxes of gauges to make sure, but you can buy the later style with the 14mm spark plug ring style that will work just fine, in fact that what Harley went to in the mid-80's, these have a thermocouple built right into the wiring harness, and are made in varying lengths. There are a number of the later style sending units on Ebay for pretty reasonable prices, I bought one off of Ebay for $12.00 brand new, it was actually meant to be used on the Dakota gauge assemblies, but it works perfectly on my Shovelhead, (and yes, their temperature range goes from 0-500 degrees. I also found a website that sells these for use in cars, but once again, they work just fine on a Harley, and have the temp. range you need.

So if anyone's interested in picking up gauges & gauge body sets for their Harley, then send me a PM & I'll get right back with you.

Everyone please stay safe & healthy out there, I've already lost relatives, long time friends, and folks I'd done a lot of business with, I'm really hoping not to lose any more
