Default HD Oil Temp Guage Delima

I installed the subject guage today and it don't work and I can't understand why. Has anyone ever have problems with this guage? I think something is wrong in the sending unit or the wiring that came with the kit. I installed exactly as instructed but don't seem to get power to the guage becuase the guage Light don't go on. If I run a spare wire to the ground lug on back of guage the light goes on. It's got me stumbed. I installed it on my 02 Electra Glide Classic. Any ideas would be welcomed.

The gauge has got to have a ground wire to it for it to work. I am not understanding what you are saying I guess. Do you have 2 ground wires on it before it works? If so the other one is not compleing the circuit to ground I would guess.

When you buy the Oil Temp Guage kit it comes with sending unit, a wiring harness, and the guage. The sending unit fits in the spare oil hole in the oil pan. The wiring harness has a plug on onend that clips on sinding unit with just two wires, yellow and black. The yellow goes to guage, the black to ground on guage and then you use the orange (hot) wire from your old air temp guage to positive post on back of guage. So, you have a temp guage wire yellow, a black wire, (ground) and the orange to hot and that's it. But it doesn't work. I tested the hot (orange wire) with Volt meter and it's hot. I'm thinking the black wire from the sending unit is not provding a proper ground. ALthough I tested with Ohm meter and it resgisters as grounded however, if I run a separate wire to ground post on guage to ground the light comes on but the guage jumps up to 110 degrees and the engine is cold. I eather got a bad guage or sending unit.

You need the black wire from the same bundle as the orange wire... re read your instructions...

4. Locate the air temperature gauge two-way positive lock
terminal housing [114B] and cut the terminals and housing
from the orange and black wires.
5. Use the Packard Crimping Tool (HD-38125-8) to strip
approximately 3/8-inch (9.5 mm) of insulation from the
wires of circuit [114], and crimp a #6 ring terminal (7) from
the kit onto the end of each wire.
6. Strip approximately 3/8-inch (9.5 mm) of insulation from
the unterminated yellow and black wires of the oil temperature
gauge wiring harness, and crimp a #6 ring terminal
onto the end of each wire.
-7. Remove the three hex nuts with lockwashers (A) from the
terminal posts on the back of the gauge. Install the wire
harness ring terminals to the posts as shown in Figure 2.
a. Two black wire terminals to the GND post. <-----------------------------------------
b. Orange wire terminal to the POS post.
c. Yellow wire terminal to the SIG post.
Fasten the ring terminals with the nuts, and tighten
securely

There is 2 ground wires that go to back of gauge... one from the bike ground and one ground from the sensor....

Welcome to the club of "I installed it exactly as the instructions said" only to find out we didn't.

Glad you got the help you needed.
