any help is greatly appreciated. Can someone clarify if the sound I am hearing is what is called "pinging."
I have recently done a pcv and se stage 1 ac @ dealer after running my Roadking w/ Vance and Hines basic slip ons by themselves for about 8 months prior to doing pcv and ac.
Bike ran flawless before but now after doing the stage 1 I am hearing what sounds llike a handful of change thrown down on a formica counter for the split second as the bike responds to an aggressive roll on the throttle in what seems to be only 5th and 6th gear.
Makes me sick because I have no idea what would make a sound like I am hearing. Sounds are subjective so I apologize for the wacky description. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks, Jeff
I have the same set up on my 2009 RK. At the same throttle positions you describe, I hear what sounds like the injectors squirting fuel. it only lasts for a second and then all sounds OK. It only happens when I aggressively twist the throttle.
Sounds like pinging to me too. What octane are you running? I tried 89 for a couple tanks, after some mileage discussion in another post, but I got a little bit of pinging so I switched back to 93. It didn't do it as long as I rode easy, but I don't always ride easy.
Same problem here, its pinging. I installed the accelerator pump feature that's available for my PC3 and it did make a difference. Still occasionally pings for a split second when I jam on the gas and I always run Super unleaded.
Pinging is detonation and detonation is bad juju. What RPM are you running when you crack the throttle. Could be that if you stop cracking the throttle at that rpm level, the problem will go away; anything below 2500 is lugging.
If you are not running 91-93 ocatane fuel, you should be, at least until the weather cools off.
You can back out some timing but that could make the bike sluggish.
You could try a cooler heat range, or two, spark plug; that may help depending on how serious the detonation is.
Have you had the stage 1 combination of the SE A/C and V&H pipes tuned? If not, I would try that first. You can eliminate the detonation with a tune. If you can do that and are stil happy with the way the bike runs, problem solved.
I used to run a high compression 95" build with SE204 cams (104TQ/94HP) and she ran great all winter and into the spring. However by June/July when the south Texas temps started to approach the mid to high 90s, she would detonate. I tired all of the above but had to change cams to eliminate the problem.
