My 09' X did the same thing after the stage 1, Keith a Fuel Moto sent me a map with a little more fuel and a little less ignition. MPG stayed the same and the ping is gone.
Thanks for all the responses thus far. The PCV came ready to install from Fuel Moto per my set up. I will call Jamie and see if there may be a different map given the newly discovered issues I am having. As far as lugging the engine, the sound seemed to be at the mid range of the power band upon aggressive rolling on the throttle at both 5th and 6th gear.
Frustrating thing is I spent the dough on the power commander and ac to increase overall performance. Dont like that I cant get on it in at minimum 5th gear with out "pinging." As I mentioned before, the bike
with just the slips ons ran flawless. Seems to be ******* now after the upgrade which kind of defeats the purpose of having the complete stage 1.
Will a dyno tune easliy identify where the breakdown in the fuel ratio is and be a simple fix...or is it if I try to tweak to solve the ping at 5th and 6th gear will cause problems at other gears and rpms?
Since you got the PCV from fuel moto, I would contact him and see if he can send you an updated map that would help before I went the route of a dyno tune. You will probably be surprised at how much a little change in the map can change things.
To me pinging always sounded like BBs being thrown into a coffee can. Try a colder plug it has worked for me in the past. With my last bike that was running 10-1 pistons i had to decrease timing and add octane booster but that was a different animal.
I think if you read your owner's manual you may find the answer. It's under "ignition" in my '06 manual, and states,
"The ignition control unit monitors engine load. In certain transient load conditions (as the throttle is opened) the timing changes from normal to fully advanced. At this point, the operator can sometimes hear a noise that is similar to pre-ignition detonation. This noise should not be confused with detonation....It is caused by the instant pressure rise in the combustion chambers as the spark advances rapidly. This noise does not affect engine performance."
You state you only hear this noise for a split second. If you're experiencing detonation it would more than likely continue much longer than a split second, especially in a higher gear at lower rpm. You state also this is only happening in 5th and 6th. Try bringing your rpm up higher in those gears, and then roll on the throttle, and compare the noise. If it doesn't happen at the higher rpm roll-on, you could very well be experiencing detonation from lugging the engine under load.
