Default Windshield Height???

Hey,

Looking to buy a taller windshield as we are headed to Sturgis and want more protection than my KW 6.5 provides. Want to make the long trip wo my ears ringing too much.

I like the ultra Long Ride Shield but unsure of what size to purchase. Should I look thru or over w.s.?

I'm only 5' 4" and ride a 09 SG.

Thanks for any input, I know there r a ton of options.

I'm 5'10" have an ultra 9" and I look over it by alot, at 5'4" I do not think you would look over it, goldwing riders run tall shields and look thru them, I like to have them tall enough for protection but be able to look over it so my view is clear

You really don't want a recurve type shield that you can look over easily. Too much distortion.

You could take a little piece of tape and put in on the inside left hand side with part of it folded on to itself so you can grab it easy and roll on down the highway. Then take the tape and put it where you can easily see over it or about the tip of your nose high. Measure the distance from the top of the tape to the fairing and you have the size shield you need (if you want to look over it).

I only suggest this method because doing it static while sitting on the bike isn't exactly the position you will be in while riding. For instance; I slump a bit when riding but not when stopped.

Should be 2" below your line of sight.

if you go to a paint supply store and get a paint stick. you know the kind that is wooden and you stir paint with it. tape it to the inside of your windshield after marking off 1/2" increments. that will give you an idea while you're riding down the highway as to where you want the upper edge of the windshield to be. i'm sold on the long ride shield as they do have the flip at the top which does not impair vision unless you're looking through it. the paint stick trick works quite well and will give you an indication by inches how high you need your windshield to be. for those who already have a shield which is too tall for them, masking tape with 1/2" marks on it works well too.

I'm maybe 5' 11".
With the stock 12" windshield I got some wind buffet when wearing a helmet.
I tried a 9.5" with re-curve and the buffet was so bad I took it off the next day. I checked the fairing mounts and they were good.
Now I have a Clearview 14" and it's much better.
Some people might tell you that you have to be able to see over the windshield "just in case".
I've had bugs all over the shield and ridden in hard rain, and I've never had to look over the shield. In the rain, I duck down behind the shield to keep the water off me ( sugar melts in water right? ).
Anyway, If you want a tall windshield for more protection, don't be afraid to get one higher than your eyes.

Not exactly on topic but close... Where do you measure the heighth of a windshield from? Obviously to the top of the windshield, but do you measure only the visible part of the (installed) windshield... top of windshield to top edge of fairing? Or do you remove the windhshield and include the portion of the windishield that is hidden by the fairing?

Or maybe I can ask it this way... What is the size of the stock windshield on my 2010 UltraClassic?

Hope I'm makin' sense, lol...

Windshields are measured by the visible part only.
Top of the fairing to the top of the shield.
My '08 EG had a 12" stock windshield

Honestly it is going to be a matter of personal preference no matter what advise you get here. Some like looking the windshield (like driving a cage) others don't (me). Your definition of bad buffeting and others on here will different.

It also depends on your seat height and what position you sit in while riding. It's not something you will figure out right away without trial and error. Most manufacturers explain how to measure your windshield and adjust based on you height.

I just put an 8" Windvest recurve on my EG. At 5' 11" w/2" lift from my mustang seat the wind goes over my helmet with no problem. I can hear my stereo just as good at 70 as I can at 25. I can't personally see putting a 14" windshield on my bike. I'm not the tallest person on the forum but for me that would equate to driving my car or truck.

BTW if your ears are ringing try earplugs or a helmet that covers your ears or both. JMHO
