I would recommend that you have one. The bugs, rain, hail and dirt, better safe than sorry. IMO it will make for a more enjoyable time.

If you've never had one you won't miss it, but! once you ride with one you won't be without, especially on longer rides....

Great point there Mikind
But i will add that it depends on what kind of miles got this guy 27K...few days of on the road for 8-10 hours a day in different types of weather, the fatigue will be a different story.
I guess he will just have to make up is own mind...lol.
good luck and have a blast in Sturgis

If you always ride without one - and in Florida there are plenty of bugs and rain right? then you'll have no problem going cross country without it. It's the guy who doesn't ride regularly without one that would be taking the big risk in leaving without it.

If you don't usually ride in rain however then the rain will def be more problematic with no WS on a big trip like this. If you're used to rain then don't worry about it i guess.

Going that far I would most definitely have a windshield. However, with a Road King you will most likely just have a windshield only, no fairing, which creates a bit more turbulence behind the screen. But with a helmet on it isn't as bad.

I have taken 2 trips across country and just about everything has hit the windshield during those trips. Cardboard blown up off the road, birds, huge moths, june bugs, every type of little bug you can think of, rain, rocks, and having that windshield stop all that has been awesome.

You can always buy one in Sturgis and then at least you will enjoy the ride home.

We have had heavy rains up here all summer but the other thought is the flower fields across SD and the BEE's that come with them.

It's a bad habit that once started, is hard to break.

Pretty well everyone has said it, a windshield is the way to go. We just came back from a long (11,000 kilometre) ride that took us through SD etc and those grasshoppers splat like hollow bullets. The ones that miss the windshield and catch your shoulder just about take you off the bike. Then there is the wind, wind and more wind plus the gravel kicked up by cagers through the endless construction zones. Enjoy, be safe and be comfortable.
