That's what I did. Then posted a picture of my old filter next to a new one and had just about everybody tell me I was wasting my time replacing the filter at 25K https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...placement.html
Well here is my "work around" for the tank lock ring removal tool. This cost me a total of $4.29. I bought the 4-way pvc connector and 4 elbows (all 3/4 inch) at my favorite Big Box Store. I had pipe laying around. Did not take much to measure and cut the stuff. Then I just marked and cut the notches...could have done better with my Dremmel, but a dirt bag stole mine...so I just used a cutter...
This worked like a charm. I loaded up the ring area with liquid wrench, let her set a while, then did the deed. Getting it off I had my step son grab 2 spokes and I grabbed 2. That way, we could press it on real good. Then, on three, Pop! Off she come! Did the service, and the ring locked back on with NO HELPER! Just slid right on. Might not hold up for multiples, but good for me!
Clayvis, that's some fine creative thinking, well done! Could be the basis for an art works for the garden.....
I found a car shock-absorber spring tool, made of alloy. It's a large C-spanner, similar to those for bike shocks, just needed trimming of the tip, so it better catches one of the ears on the locking ring.
