noob needs help with brake lights
I don't know if this will help , but you'll get bumped up a little.
Look under the rear fender at the wiring and check for chafed or broken leads.
Unplug the rear harness under the seat and see if the fuse blows.
If not , this supports the wiring thought.
If you have a stop/turn/tail light module , remove it while you test the fuse.
If the fuse is OK with these items disconnected , start plugging them back in one at a time , till it blows.
Slow and methodical will generally find the problem pretty easily.
Make sure to get a factory service manual , you'll be glad you did for this and future projects.
Good luck..

Ended up being the run/turn/brake module. But as I mentioned I used my meter to narrow it down. Saves on blowing fuses and replacing them.
Not sure about the speedo. Is it permanently reading 38 or is that as high as it reads? Speed sensor maybe?
Hope that helps.
BTW, if you don't have one you pick up an inexpensive one at harbor freight, radio shack, walmart etc.

Your choices would be try and do itself, go to indy or dealer. Tracing wires is time consuming but once you find the problem you fix it.
Unless they have changed the wiring between 01 & 02 your fender tip light has 2 wires, gray and gray or black & black, your turn signals have 2 wires for each one, violet/brn or violet & black, the brake light has blue, black, red/yellow and orange white (this is for HDI bike). All the lights have separate connectors that plug into a circuit board behind the tail/brake light.
There is a main connector that has 6 wires running into it and is connected to your run/turn/brake module and that connects to a connector that has 8 wires running to your main interconnect harness. This gives you a total of 8 connectors to check for a short in the wiring.
This is the best I can do for you. I would suggest if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, take to a mechanic. THERE IS NO QUICK FIX.I don't know much but I spent 9 years of my life troubleshooting wiring on aircraft in the Marine Corps. Good luck and don't cut corners just to try and get back on the road.
Now that you have found out what it's "not" it's time to roll up your sleeves and get into the good stuff.
If you're not comfy with this type of thing , take it to a dealer and tell them exactly what you've done so far.
Being a shop owner/Auto mechanic , what I have run into is a good decription of the problem and a little backround , will lead me to a faster answer and less labor (usually) for the customer.
Good luck , and let us know what you find , I'm curious now..........
Mick
