Thanks for the great ideas. I was going to buy the Harley-Davidson oil catcher oil funnel that is advertised in the 2010 spring supplement catalog, but was told it was worthless.
Think I'll try the soft drink bottle.

After an oil change, I go to a water hose, coat the oil filter are and the whole bottom of the bike in Simple Green, give it about a minute, then use a flowing stream of water to rinse it all off. I have a funnel and still made a mess.

I use foil or a piece of a paper plate to deflect the oil away from the regulator. Clean up with CRC electric parts cleaner. Dries instantly and leaves no residue like brake cleaner. Dealer told me about the electric parts cleaner. Works as promised. Did mine yesterday.

Just did this yesterday myself. I made a drip tray out of aluminum foil and caught most of the oil when I loosened the filter, the rest that dripped down I cleaned off with brake cleaner. If I can remember next time I'm going to try the Coke bottle method - when you only change it twice a year it's hard to remember the tricks!

I have not had a problem. The only thing painted it touches is the frame. Don't see how it would bother the wiring, it all gets soaked while riding in the rain. I don't spray hard water, I am just using a steady stream of water.
