Ok, I hope for this to be my only stupid newbie question regarding my '06 Ultra that was just picked up 3 days ago. I traded a Sportster 1200 for this so I have road experience but not a vast amount. The dealership did a Stage 1 upgrade before I bought it.
The question is that when I downshift from 5th to 4th and from 4th to 3rd there is a substantial high-pitched whine as I let out the clutch. If I just tap the throttle before letting out the clutch it reduces the whine a bunch. Keeping in mind the break-in period (only 149 miles so far) and staying below 3,000 rpm even at downshift, is this something I should have looked at -or- is it a matter of how I am downshifting.
If anyone has advice it would be greatly appreciated. If I need a virtual slap upside the head I can handle that to ... as long as you tell me why! I really plan on this one lasting a lifetime and need to learn quickly.
Thanks

Of course it whins if you load up a lower ratio gear with higher rpm thats normal, try less rpm before downshifting, every bike has it's sweet spots, you just have to find them.
Gotta go with GR here its just because your gearing down harder to slow the bike faster... the blip of the throttle speeds the primary components back up to match up the tranny gears easier. we all do it its just a matter of getting used to your bike
Downshift with no whine or clunking , downshift from 5 th to 4th @40mph, from 4th to 3nd @ 30mph, from 3nd to 2nd @ 20mph and down into first @ 10mph.
This is not a power downshift to slow the bike, use your brakes to slow down with, this down shift is just a nice easy downshift point that keeps you in a gear to pull away if you have to.
Remember the Ultra is a 4Door Cadilac, lots of room, lots of storage space, great ride, decent handling, and decent power.
Appreciate the response(s)! I don't think I was doing a 'power downshift' as the rpm never got above 3k, but that said I used JBA's speeds and it does MUCH better. Not to mention the gurgle, pop and sputter of these Screamin' Eagle pipes really sounds great!
I also took it to my dealer on Sunday (they have a tech working Sundays!). He checked over the primary and took it for a brief ride. He hears the whine that I am talking about but doesn't think it is abnormal. Because I am in the break-in I had been concerned about lugging the engine so I was downshifting sooner than I should. I'll get this yet. Put 500 miles over the holiday weekend in between lawn mowing and various chores. Scheduled to get my 1K checkup Sept 12th.
