euchre98, I'm 5'10" and I cut down a screen to the same height as the low-profile contoured screen for the Road Glide on my '02 RG.
I get smooth air going past my full face helmet with no buffeting.
Don't know about the chopped black shield but it might be close to the same.

Here are the combos that I have found:
full sheild, either helmet- wind comes from underneath and tries to go up your nose
short shield, DOT helmet: turbulance past the ears, resulting in need for earplugs most of the time and the floating helmet trick
short shield, no helmet/skidlid: Wind in the face a bit, but not overpowering. Earplugs for longer rides.

6'4 with a 8" black shield.
Pretty much like riding without a windshield but you get body protection from the fairing, but damn it looks cool, & u can always put the stock windshield on for long trips.
