i had the opposite problem. my switch went bad in the closed contact position. when i would turn on my ignition, the speedo would go into diagnostic mode.
it was under warranty and the dealer replaced it in about 15 mins.
Do not use WD40 on electronics it is ummmm flammable. It also leaves a residue on the parts that will attract dust and other crapola that will eventually cause problems in the future. I know this from experience in my old 4 wheeling days. WD40 + electricity = flame on
Use a contact cleaner if your going to use anything of that nature.
Good luck.
there are two kinds of electrical contact cleaner as well. one with lube and one without.
Uh Wd 40 is made from vegetable oil, the propellant may be flammable but not the lube. He said he was going to use electrical contact cleaner.....Did you get it to work?
Ok, ok not to but....I'm gonna just for the safety of others.
WD40 per "their" website in FAQ's is 50% "mineral spirits" and thus by virtue of thermal reaction "is" flammable. Don't believe me give it a try. I'm just trying to keep an adverse accident from happening in advance. But thanks for your response.
I have a propensity for confirming my facts by doing research which sometimes includes personal experience. But that's just me.
I took my old switch out and total took it apart and cleaned and lubed it all up. Put it back in and it has been working for over a year now.
It's easy to get to and easy to fix. I used some DE-OX as the contact lube.
I am an electrician so it was pretty much a joke to do and re-wire back into the bike and i had the de-ox. But i'd say it's a easy easy job for anyone to do.
Save you money and take the time and do it yourself....good way to get to know your bike.

That's interesting because I tend to confirm facts too. I went to the WD-40 website, looked at their FAQs and find nothing that tells you the percentages of anything... with no mention of mineral spirits. However, one of the things it does say is: "DISPLACES MOISTURE: Because WD-40 displaces moisture, it quickly dries out electrical systems to eliminate moisture-induced short circuits." I find it interesting that they would recommend it for use on an electrical system if it was flammable. I've used it many times in electrical systems without any "Flame On" situation. Maybe I was just lucky. Of course, YMMV.

Thank you pointing out my error. I guess that's what Capt's are for huh?
But with that in mind and just in jest...It didn't take an act of Congress for me to be classified as a gentleman. JK. Thanks for you service. What the hell do you expect from an ol' jarhead?
Seems like this is a common problem with the speedo reset button/switch taking a crap. Mine just went too, same symtoms keep playing with it and after 20 pushes it works, will go to stealership and get new one after work tommorrow!
You can always try unscrewing the weather proof cover on the button and spray some electrical contact cleaner or some WD 40. Usually theres carbon build up in the switch. I bet this fixes it for you.
I tried you suggestion. And it totally worked... I unscrewed the button cover. Got lucky and it did not fall back into the fairing. Used Needle Nose plyers to hold the switch. Sprayed it with WD-40 and pushed the button many times and keep spraying the button. Carefully screwed back on the button cover and waited several hours for everything to dry. Turned the bike on the the odometor switch works perfectly. Your suggestiion probably saved me hundreds of dollars if HD fixed it for me. Especially if they just sprayed it. Thanks for you suggestion.
