Default Using the headsets

Well, I have a new 07 ultra and I am just getting used to riding while listening to the radio, but now I am wanting to try out the headsets. What helments are you guys using and do I get the extra head set from Harley or J and M. I am used to a half helment but I am guessing that I need to go to a at least 3/4 helment for the ear pieces. I know, I know stupid question but I would really like advice from others that have been using the intercom. I hate to spend money and I really hate to spend money on things that I know nothing about. Any help would be appreciated.

I use a Half hemet with the speakers in a zip out wrap around. Works good and not as hot a a 3/4 or full face. I also have a 3/4 I use when it's cold and hide hehind my windshield.

Here's a link just to to show you the helmet, I bought mine local.

I ALWAYS wear a Full Face, and it not because of the headset speakers! I have 2 helmets, a SHOEI and a CABERG.. You basically do some surgery on the ear pads to allow the speakers inserts. The rest is cake. Most of the pads are held in with glue. I would not recommend cutting the fabric. Just undue the glue or tape, hollow out a hole for the speakers. Placement is critical. Try to determine EXACTLY where your EarS are on the pads, and cut to fit. I had a $550 Shoei, did not want to CUT it, but it was really no big deal. Good liuck....BTW, both are flip ups, so when it does get hot, I just flip it up (sitting in traffic), but lock in place when crusing. The Caberg can actually be made into a 3/4 by taking the front piece off. I have never done this, but next summer, I will probably try it.

Ergonomic single-push button opening
• Extremely silent
• Moveable Stop-Wind
• Aerodynamic capacity tested in the wind-tunnel
• Completely removable & washable CoolMax® lining
• Lateral lever for smoke visor sliding
• Rain protection rims
• Adjustable anti-misting system
• Standard fog free visor
• Internal air circulation canalization
• Convert it into a Jet - Conversion kit included
• Visor Quick Release System

Ever since I got this helmet, I quit wearing the Shoei. The Caberg has 2 visor, built in. A flip dark visor and the standard full face visor. You can see it in the pic.

I have J&M. That is waht came with my Ultra. I have never used a Harley headset, but have not heard anything good about them. IMHO, you will never get high quality sound, since so much noise from pipes, wind, etc creeps in.

I use the J&M Elite on my full face helmet. I put the HD headset that came with my ultra in my wife's helmet, so I can't compare.
After getting the J&M from a local shop I wasn't confidenit I could install it cleanly, so I sent it to J&M with my helmet and they installed it. (I think it cost $25 for the service?)
We wear full face helmets for safety, hense I name "rookierider".
We are both happy with our headsets - do have to adjust the VOX setting based on road conditions and speed because of the diferent noise levels.
Lower sensitivy on highways or rougher roads, and more sensitive on surface streets.
Helmet with headset feels like 'old' stereo headphone with great sound. Engulfed in sound - just need to make sure the volume is not so high to lead to distractions.
Have fun!

I've only heard that all 1/2 helmets will not except a headset. Is that true or not?

My wife and I both use the Harley headsets with our harley 1/2 helmets. I used velcro to stick the speakers to the inside of the leather flaps and just screwed the mike to the leather flap on the left side. I figured the mike would blow around in the wind, but the setup works very well on my ultra cruiser.

Seer makes adapters for HD headsets and for universal to fit half helmets. Take a look.

Best way I know of, go straight to the experts for helmet and headset:

I have the JM headset installed in my SEER helmet. The JM headset is a lot better than the HD headset in my opinion.

My wife and I have a pair of Nolan N41 3/4 helmets that I installed H-D headsets in. We use them when ever we ride together so we can use the intercom. when the weather gets hot here in central florida (only about 3 months) I ride alone most of the time ,I'm commuting or sometimes running one of the kids around, I where my 1/2 helmet and the kids use a full face (only one that fit them good) My wife doesn't find roasting on the bike all that fun.
If I had it to do again I think I would buy a flip-face helmet for the intercom set up, I'm guessing it would a little quiter.
My 2 pennies worth.

Take a piece of Velcro (the soft half) and sew it to your strap on your Half helmet ( between the v of strap) peel and stick a piece of velcro (hard half) to the back of the specker. Stick in place and your done. Works great with a half helmet. and you can move it to a good fit with your ear. Works with and without the zip in neck liner
.
We did this with the Harley headsets and it works great.

If you get the J&M headset, you will also need the half cord for a Harley setup.
