Nice to see this thread revived.

As I said in the original post, if you've had a problem with your stock compensator, PLEASE report this to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Only through grass-roots action will the Motor Company take action to recall this significant safety default.

The website to file any complaints is: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm

The life you save could be your own!

Default SE compensator FRETTING Problems verses stock comp

There has been a lot of Talk and Show of picts that describe the RUST like problem of the SE comp. The problem is Not enough Lube gets INTO the New SE unit and HD DOES need to address this.. They have been silent as they don't want to rock the $$$$$ boat.. Just like moving the specks for out of alignment cranks out to about .012 instead of .006 where .006 was shakey enough..

Picts of the Grooving on the back-side of the SE comp and ways to get a few drops of oil INTO the Closed up SE unit is a must read and see.. Harley WON"T even Mention it as a problem, EVEN when I asked my parts man at a local shop HE said HE wasn't going to talk about it as NOTHING came from HD about it... HE KNEW about the Grumbling.

The FRETTING it is called has been talked about on a little smaller thread and if you want to know which one ,,, PM me and I will let you know.... I don't want to post the information then find out I was NOT supposed to...

Honestly ,, I didn't look into it here and IT well might have something to share if you LOOK..

Default As per the Fretting issue Redhead referred to

Attached is a picture of the easy fix. According to "Dawg" a very knowledgeable and respected member of this Forum you need to grind the face of the sprocket as indicated in the picture in 3 places. This is easily done with a pencil grinder or hand grinder.

The SE Comp came standard on the '11 models. I'm waiting to hear after some of those 2011 bikes get some mileage on them if there are any issues with the compensator regarding lubrication. Until then, I'll just keep changing the ATF on a regular basis and keep my fingers crossed.

Just a FYI on my 2010 that had a SE Comp installed a couple months ago.

Due to weather I didn't get to ride much more than a couple hundred miles. I got on it to ride it to work and when I let off the throttle or let out the clutch I get a loud chirping from the primary area.

After five or ten miles the chirping goes away. Let it sit and cool off and the chirp is back --- back to the shop and another great weekend comes and goes and all I can do is watch the bikes go by my house..

That sucks..

Apparently there is an issue with the SE Compensator fretting due to there not being enough oil getting to the shaft. I don't know how serious this issue is or even that it is. It would seem metal would be flaking off and getting into the system, which would only cause wear on other parts. It is suggested you mod your SE Sprocket by grinding 3 slots in the face of the SE Sprocket to allow more oil to get by. "Dawg" addresses this issue in another post somewhere here on the Forum. I posted a picture of the "fix" a few posts before this one.

Changed mine to an SE yesterday on my 2010 RK... will be checking to see if there are any problems with it by the end of this riding season... two and a half hour job to change it out so not a big deal. Looking at the stock compensator no wonder there are problems with it.. I was getting a shudder, two up especially on the hills. Soon as the weather lets me I will give it a check ride...

Ive have a small amount of rattle/ratcheting/chatter noise in my primary when the bike is warm and stopped at a light. Does this sound like a compensator issue? I have a 2010 Ultra.

dad311,
The noise I heard was like it was if I was trying to start out in 3rd gear but in 1st, and the same type sound when in 5th when I would roll on the throttle. Mech first thought it was the chain auto adjuster wasn't working properly, and had me run up to 70mph and idle down and jump on the throttle a few times. I hopes that the adjuster would tighten / raise the tensioner. There will also be vibrations felt when the noise is happening which can be felt on the floorboard and or primary case.
