Kinda reminds me of a "merge" I tried to make in New Orleans about 26 years ago. There was a street sign - only it was about 1/3 normal size and it said "STOP". Most ramps actually have a merge lane. This one didn't and I neer saw the STOP sign. End result - I got hit by a car moving along the highway in the right lane. Sure they had right of way but anyone unfamiliar with the intersection would never guess the ramp abruptly stopped with no merge lane what so ever - unless they read the street sign. Clear road signing is helpful.
Not trying to be a dick, but it doesn't really matter if the yield sign was covered or not, It's HIS responsibility to merge safely onto the interstate. Sorry he got hurt, but it sounds like he needs to figure things out a little bit before he merges onto an interstate.
+1 Don't want to be dick #2 but turn your head almost 180 degree to see for traffic before entering the hwy is must, Speedy recovery and be safe please.
