Default Tranny whine

I have a trans whine. We thought it was the clutch bearing, but it's not.The mechanic says it has to be a trans bearing making the noise. When you pull the clutch in you can hear it.
It goes away when you put it in gear. Paid it off a couple of weeks ago,and now it's falling
apart.First the radio, now the tranny.I'll get the trans pulled tomorrow. At least by the time the tranny is rebuilt my radio will be back from Iron Cross Audio.

I wasn't going to answer this thread...

Since you didn't ask a question, I felt it would be in bad taste. But then, you wouldn't know I was even here...

So I found myself in a quandry, answer a nonquestion, or leave without notice...

I guess I like being noticed more...

Good luck with the tranny...

I stopped this morning on a ride and noticed the same noise when I put it in neutral. It is really noticeable until you put it in gear. Then the noise goes away. But sitting there in neutral it is loud.

I got it home and made note to check all the fluid levels. I have 24K on this bike and think it is getting worse. Glad I have the extended warranty.

No extended warranty on mine. Mechanic says it's a bearing on the
main shaft.

Mainshaft bearing failures on 07's are quite common. Have done now two on mine. Do a search on tranny bearing as there was a recent thread on it with many telling of their bearing failures

Well, I just stopped at the local HD shop and had the service mgr come out at listen to it. Without ever bending over the first thing he said was "Compensator Nut". I looked at him perplexed and then kept putting it in and out of gear.

The he got on his knees and listened to the primary and looked up at me and said, "It's coming from the back!" ["No sh*t, Sherlock" I was thinking.]

He reached under and tried the tension on the belt. Now, it's tight but I think with 10 LBS it is probably 3/8" - barely within spec (When I got home I put it on a bike lift which is ok according to the instructions. I used a 9 LBS jug [@ 1 gallon] of water and hung it on the belt. It deflected exactly 3/8") But he claimed, no, that tight belt must have caused that main bearing to go bad. [All of this on top of the fact that I didn’t get a new job today that I really, really, really wanted and now I have to stay working for the bitch from hell!!!]

He asked when the last time it was serviced. I told him I had done the 10,000 about 11,000 miles ago and it was ready for another fluid change and service. As a matter of fact I already bought the fluid. He said he didn't care if I did the service work or a shop did, just that it was done. But more importantly, the rear tire had been changed 7,500 miles ago by another shop. That’s the last time it would have been adjusted. (I’m a little late on my 5,000.) I told him about the tire at 7,500 as he walked around the bike and saw the trailer hitch. "That will void the warranty” he said as he kicked it. I said, "Just because it's there doesn't mean I've used it." He said that didn't matter. Then he said, “We’ll do it under warranty here but you wouldn’t have a warranty anywhere else…..

What is the size of the weld nut and the cap nut on an ’09 FLHT? It’s between a 1 3/8 and 1 ˝ and it is bigger than my biggest (32mm) metric. I can’t find the size in the manual or anything. Is it 36MM or 1 7/16"?

The bearing on the mainshaft was in terrible shape. It fell apart when
taken out,and was pitted real bad.If you hear a noise when you pull
the clutch in it needs to be checked out. What bothers me is if the
radio hadn't gone out how bad would it have got before I heard it?

That bearing failed on my 07 at 28K. Some people call it a mainshaft bearing. I call it an inner primary bearing.

Noise in neutral, goes away when you pull the clutch. Sound comes from the rear of the primary.

Is it caused by the belt being too tight? I doubt it. HD has changed the bearing and mainshaft in late 07. They must know something is wrong with the bearings they used or they wouldn't make an update.
