Well I be darned . . .

er actually, no - not even close ;-). I can only ssume that your current fasteners are slightly damaged in which case I highly recommend you replace them so you are able to remove them in the future without drilling off the heads.

BINGO!!! I didn't think about that! It makes the most sense for an answer to the thread. I couldn't get the T30 to even go near catching the edges of the fastener but didn't come close to forcing it. T30 should not fit in a T27 screw. Good catch. This forum is always a good learning tool. That's why I love it.

I'm no certifed mechanic by any means, and I'm also not in the habit of disrespecting others, but... It just seems right that a size 27 fastener should be removed/installed with a size 27 tool. A friend of mine played hell removing a fastener from the derby cover after it stripped out, then broke off after using a variety of tools, except for the right one.

If the size 27 tool doesn't work in the size 27 fastener, then it seems to me that something is wrong somewhere, and the answer is to find out why... then fix it.

Again, no disrespect meant, and of course in a pinch we all use what we can to get off the side of the road.

I put socket head allen bolts in mine after I made the T25 mistake on one of them,(in my defense my Torx set didn't have a T27 in it,didn't think twice, lol) The allen bolts are no worries, easy to get out.

Just to clarify there are 2 different types of torx screws(bolts)

TORX which everyone is used to seeing

TORX Plus which has a slightly different head. Elliptical on the star area as opposed to angular.

Standard Torx drivers can be used to drive Torx Plus screws, but not to full torque because of the loose fit. Torx Plus drivers will not fit standard Torx screws.

YMMV.

This is true. To the best of my knowledge H-D continues to use standard Torx for now.

The majority of problems with the T-27 is that many use a T-25 and wonder what went wrong.

Sorry guy's, I didn't mean to cause any confusion. Maybe my Armstrong T-30 is mislabeled. I had read so many post about problems getting the screws out of the Derby covers. I was experimenting with the Torx bits I have and found my T-30 fit really well. I haven't had a problem myself. In fact I just changed the Primary oil in my wifes Trike yesterday. I always torque the bolt's and use the sequence in the manual. Fact! I haven't stripped a bolt yet except those chicken chit fasteners HD put on the fairings to hold the windshield. I've already installed the repair kit there.

after removing the t-27 screws from my primary cover when the bike was brand new, i use anti seize on the threads and torque them properly to specs. i've never had a problem with them at all, and don't plan on it either. an inch pound torque wrench is necessary for some jobs, including the derby cover screws.
