I paid 30 bucks for mine at the stealer. I tried everything to make my stock one not twist itself into the way. this thing worx great. it does let my pack open further and the gauge of wire does concern me a bit, but then I think, I fly famous rich people on wires this size on a regular basis over the heads of the audience so it is probably fine. not planning on rigging a bag of cement to my lid anyways.

In my experience, if there is no picture, it is very easy to make yourself. They don't want you to copy it.

I installed mine a few weeks ago with no problems, but like others it scared me to when I first opened the lid, I did not think that it would ever stop. Now when I open it I keep a hold of the lid and let it extend. The best thing about it is that you don't have to worry about pushing the cord back under the tour pak lid... this is good stuff

I'd gotten in the habit of grabbing the cable when I open the lid, so I can keep a little tension on it and not hit the fully open position so hard. I also grab the cable to start the lid closing. Both woth fine with the retractable - and it never ends up hanging out...

I also put the retractable tether on my bike and I grab the tether to close the lid also. No problems yet.

However, I do carry the old wire in my "Junk Parts" Lock & Lock food container which I keep in my saddlebag just in case it breaks.

If you put a half turn in the original tether by making a loop in it (by rotating the cable at the lid end 1 turn) the cable will self loop towards the rear of the TP and generally place itself out of the way when you close the lid.
I don't recall which way to turn it but you will know when it's right. I think it's clockwise looking toward the front of the bike, but you can easily check it and correct it.
Works fine for me-- don't like the retractable-- too flimsy.
