Are the heavy duty hinges by H-D or after market? Do you have the part number?

Another product is the Ultra brace - http://www.jpcycles.com/product/840-011 which is more a snap open metal brace.

Both around $80 shipped.

I have the Ultra Brace and really like it. Allows the lid to stand more upright without leaning away from the bike. More upright means anyone walking on the other side of the bike isn't likely to walk into the lid when its open. The Ultra Brace also allows you to open the lid with 1 hand and close with 1 hand which is a big advantage when you're carrying stuff. I also upgraded to the HD premium hinges when I installed the hinge. The combo is a great upgrade and the Ultra Brace is far better than a tether in my opinion.

Because its a hinge instead of a tether the lid is far less likely to be blown closed while its open. The hinge has a perfect amount of friction to hold the lid open against windy conditions.

I like it alot.

I installed one of HD Retractable tour-pak cords on my Ultra. The other day the cord itself broke and allowed my lid to fold all the way back.I had the lid open when it broke and the bike was in the garage at the time. I think I got luck it wasn't outside with wind because this could have damaged my trunk very easily.

I was wondering if anyone else has had trouble with the cord breaking etc. If you have one of these yourself, look your cable over well and often for wear because if it breaks like mine did your lid will fold open backwards and can cause damage.

Mine broke this week!!! The little wire itself snapped while it was open. Not a pleasant experience! No damage to the tourpak, but think I was just lucky. Put the stock tether back on TO STAY!!

I have one on my bike and am concerned it will break at some point. The diameter is pretty small.

Had mine for severaly years with no issues. But I also don't whip it open snapping the cord tight. I have been very happy with it.

I will retract slower in cold weather however.
