We are just beginning to plan our trip for next July down the West coast starting in Seattle and hopfully making it to San Diego. We want to take our time and travel the coast, 101 and 1 highways for the most part. Distance each day is one we are working on and want to make it a leasurely trip. Any suggestions on great towns or places to avoid?
This is our big retirement trip that we have been looking forward to for years! Yea!!! Thanks for any experience anyone can offer!
Well - for bragging rights you might think about starting in Vancouver BC - then you can say you did the whole coast. There's also some nice scenery north of Seattle (of course you already know that given where you live). Do you want to stay strictly on the coast the whole way?
Be sure to stop at Big Sur. It's amazing. The California coast is beautiful. If everybody would move out of there, I would move back. Do the whole Oregon coast for sure. You'll love it.

Take the Mukilteo ferry to Whidbey, ride up to Anacortes, crossing the Deception Pass Bridge, then ferry thru the San Juans and to Pt. Townsend & check out Fort Worden (film location for "Officer/Gentleman"). Cross the top of the peninsula, hit the 7-Cedars Casino in Sequim for the noon lunch buffet ($4-5 with a $5 gaming ticket), or Fri/Sat $16 AYCE Prime Rib Buffet starting at 4pm. Follow 101 thru Pt. Angeles, see Hurricane Ridge, beautiful ride past Crescent Lake, Sol Duc Hot Springs/Falls and out to Neah Bay at the tip of the Olympic Peninsula...then you've got the whole Pacific Coast south of you.
This maybe a little out of your way BUT your on Vacation :-)
Take the Port Angeles ferry to Victoria,BC ride up the Island to Nanaimo,BC take the Departure Bay ferry to Vancouver then head south along the coast line IT'S AWSOME if the sun is shinning.
Lived in Tacoma 1990-2005. You live in Seattle. I was raised on Oregon Coast. Lived in California (north and southern coast) Head for the equater man! Sun and warm temps. Beaches with blistering hot sand. Get to San Diego as quickly as possible and spend as much time in the California climate as possible. Best weather San Diego to Santa Cruz. Coming from Seattle you deserve sunny warm riding. California is a great place to ride and visit. Get a visiter guide as there is just too much to do and see. Riding the California coast is night and day from the Pacific northwest coast. You're gonna have a great time. Spend as much time in the southern climes as you can!
Thanks for the feedback! We are headed South and have already done the BC coast and San Juans. So, we will go through Oregon "farely" quickly and on to California, where yes, the weather is better and the coast is gorgeous!! Cannot wait! We are going to spoil ourselves rotten!
Since you already live on the coast, you are probably aware, but bring your leathers and gloves. We had them put away in Wisconsin and had to use them every day in June on the coast. It was kind of a bummer, we left 80-90 degree weather for the coast of California (San Diego down to San Louis Obispo) and 50 degree temps with clouds. Yes, for you who have never been there, 50 degree highs in June.
