Every few months I look at a handful of bikes on eBay and watch the auctions, just to get a feel for the market for used bikes.
Suggestion: Only do so if you don't mind getting sick.
I've watched a handful of 2006 Street Glides, EG Classics, and EG Ultras. Not a single bike I've watched has actually sold. None has made it to the seller's reserve price. The average highest bid for any of the models has been about $15,000-$15,500. Most of the bikes I've watched have been primarily stock. There have been a couple with modest mods (mainly exhaust).
So, not a good time to sell, but a great time to buy!
e-bay is not the place to sell high ticket items. most bidders are looking for laydowns and unrealistic deals. I recently listed a 19,000 mile 02 harley truck which carries a retail of 27-27k. .it barely cracked 16k. one guy actually bid 5,000 and stopped. i cant believe he thought he could buy it for that.
I was checking bikes out on ebay too for a while. I would never buy a bike sight-unseen, I don't think too many people would. People just looking to get lucky I think.
Don't use ebay to measure values of anything.
I bought an accessorized 03 classic in Feb 04 for 15K. So not much has changed. Yet I have seen some go for more money than they sell for at local stealer. Don't figure. If you want a real shock, look at the resale on the metrics. Those guys take a real beating.
Lower prices are justified on metrics, they cost less (most, not all), and most did not pay a preimum over sticker like SOME HD. Sold my 02 GoldWing for $12,000, which is exactly what I paid for it 6 months prior. Bought my 05 UC for $15,000, when the NADA listed it at $18,000. Its all about being a SMART shopper. Off of EBAY by the way.
Forget ebay if you are selling, but you might luck into a deal buying but no way does it represent the used bike market, Harley prices are down and will go down more, you see high prices being asked but they are not selling. The Harley market has more than caught up with supply and demand, new bikes are at every dealer with no waiting lists and many dealers are now selling below msrp. This is something they have not done in many years. The poor guys that paid 3or 4k over list back several years ago are going to ride those bikes forever or take a heck of a loss if they want to trade up.
