Installing adj back rest, Help?
I'm installing an adj rider backrest and I've run into a road block. I'm new to Harley and have purchased a Service Manual for my 2011 ultra limited.
Here's the problem. The instructions say to remove the left side cover according to the service manual, but I can't locate it in the service manual.
Second issue, it appears that I have to remove the ECM in order to attach the two bolts on the mounting bracket, is this right?
I'm leery of going outside of the instructions and screwing something else up.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
cestep6

Here's the link to the harley site that shows the adjustable mount. The PDF is on the site, but I can't seem to attach the file.
If you look at the Installation pdf, look at the following steps:
Removal: step 2 Remove the left side cover following the instructions in the service manual.
Installation:
Step 4: Install mounting bracket...
If you look at figure 3 in the instructions, it appears to me that in order to tighten the two bolts and attach them to the frame the ECM caddy had to be removed to get my fingers underneath the bolts to attach the nut, but the instructions don't mention it.
Sorry, I should have given more detail, hope this helps better define what I'm asking.

I installed one on my Ultra. If I remember correctly, I did not have to remove the left cover, but I did have to remove the left heat shield.
I did not have to remove the ECM, just make sure the cable is away from the mounting bracket, it is a little tight there.

I think I did have to remove my left side cover. Your adjustable lever mounts ride in front of it. The side cover is the large painted piece of bodywork below your seat. You just grasp it and pull. It is held on by some rubber boots and just pulls right off.
No offense but this is not a really simple deal. If your having trouble at this point, it might be a good idea to pay your dealer to do it. If not, I would make one suggestion that is not in your instructions: 3M 2 sided tape really secures the mounting bracket well onto the frame piece.
Edit to add: I think the top caddy is the cover over the battery that organizes a bunch of wires.

Hi Carbide,
Thanks for the info and the advice. I do feel a little stupid though, my goldwing had the same type of cover, I didn't realize it had the rubber grommets. I might end up having the dealer do it, but I guess I'm being overly cautious. I'm use to working on computers. You are right the top caddy is the cove for the battery. My apologies for using the wrong terms.

If I take my seat off this weekend I will take a couple photos. It is not really difficult to install the adjustable backrest. I am far from being a mechanic and did not have any problem putting one on my roadking. You can do it without paying the dealer.
Thanks for the offer, but I got it installed and it works great!! Thanks to everyone who offered help to this harley newbie!!!! Very much appreciated!!
