I have had various problems with some HD heated grips on my 08 Road King. They seem to work intermittently and also the thottle grip slides down the handlebars. Eventually, the dealer is going to replace the grips. However, I'm unsure what it means in the catalogue when it says 'unsuitable for internally wired handlebars' Does it mean that the wiring of the heated grips is unsuitable for wiring internally or that the heated grip wiring cannot go internally when there are other internal wires ? In any case, can someone advise whether my 08 Road King (with fly by wire throttle) has 'internally wired handlebars'.
Your going to find that HD makes the worse heated grips on the market. And this is confirmed by the Tech at my dealership. 2010 SEUC and guess what????? YEP!
The original owner of my 04 bike had the heated grips installed when new. They replaced them twice and worked on them 5 times in 3 years. When I got the bike they were not working and I put it all in the trash mainly because I did not need them. When working do they help keep your hands warm?
It is hard to believe that they put them on the Ultra Limited, when they have so many problems with them. Maybe that is their selling point for the extended warranty.
I have an 08 also and havehad a couple issues just like you. The grip sliding off was my problem also I took the right grip off and there was this like silicone stuff goop that was the culprit. I do not suggest you do this it was a nightmare to get it back together but I did it. What the problem is when the right grip is sliding off it unplugs itself out of the end of the throttle by wire connection. Take the end cap off of your right gripand look in there. There is a two pronged connector from the heated grip that is mor than likely unplugged. I used needle nosed pliars to pullit out check it out and plug it back in. Every since then with the goop gone and the wire plugged in she is good to go. Bet that will fix your problem.
You can install them internally wiring them. Just need to drill a hole in the left switch housing. There's a picture anywhere in the forum I posted time ago (I mounted them in a RK09).
Mine did the same thing after I replaced the switch housings. Try pulling off the end cap of the right grip. (it should come off with your fingernails or flatblade) Inside is a connector with two pins make sure it is pluged it tight. It only goes in one way. Hope this helps.
