Default Oil cooler question ?

Those of you with oil coolers, Do you cover them up when its cold out ? I haven't had my 05 EGC very long and ride all year long. Are you supposed to cover up your oil cooler when it gets below---? I have a 20 mile ride to work everyday, and with cold weather coming up, I want to protect my engine. My 95 Dyna does not have an oil cooler on it, and collects a lot of moisture in the oil during cold weather. I just change oil more often to compensate. What's best ?

My Ironhead has a HD branded Lockhart 500 cooler that has been on it since new. It also has a HD cover that goes with it. I keep it covered nearly all the time. The only time I ever take it off is in extreme summer heat or heavy traffic like at a rally.

I'd likely cover the cooler on your EG during the cold...Personally, I don't think it needs it at all, but that's another matter.

I never did on my '05 EGC w/H-D Premium oil Cooler. Do you have an oil temp gauge? If so monitor it and see what the difference is between covered/uncovered and go by that. Cruising speeds i got around 180-190 in winter and 195-205 in summer if I remember correctly.

Oil coolers should come standard.

Yours should have a thermostat. No need to cover it up although it would probably not hurt it.

My Ultra has a thermostat, so it's no for it. The Sportster on the other hand does not, so yeah I cover it when the temperature drops below 60*.

I never cover on my 07 UC for last 54+ miles, it has a thermostat which opens I think around 180-190. My temp gauge never showed higher then 235 degree even in hot days.

I have the Hd Premium oil cooler on my Ultra and I never cover mine up as it is thermostatically controlled.

No need to cover. They come with a thermostat in them. Some HD coolers are at 180 degrees and some are at 195.
