I always ran H.D. Syn-3 oil in my motor, worked fine just cost a lot. I bought Valvoline SYNpower 20W50 full synthetic from Advance Auto parts. You can get it for under $7.00 Qt on sale. I pounded 4000+ miles on with no issues, and I don't plan to change it for another 1000, looks good yet. I just wanted to save a few coins. P.S. Exceeds API services SM/SL,CF, ACEA A3/B3/B4/C3 services and all preceeding API catagories, made in U.S.A. This is just my opinion.
I agree with you, there's no reason for Syn3 and Amsoil and a few others to cost so much. I don't think they are any better. I've started using Mobil 1 15/50 in my bikes.
I do use Redline V-twin Tranny fluid and Redline Primary fluid. I like the way it shifts and no problems finding neutral.
Pay attention, you might learn something. The man has a good point! Somebody reading the forum might just be thinking, I wonder if Valvoline Syn-Power 20/50 is good oil. I would ask, but I'll get flamed...LOL
It was my understanding that we should avoid SM rating oils as they removed some of the key anti-wear ingredients the v-twins need; SJ being better in our application.

I used the same fluids in mine for the 1k service, and will always use them. Good Choice!!
