Try a product called FLITZ. Works well on Chrome, and aluminum. I have also used to freshen up hazed paint..

I use this stuff, brass wool no scratches at all and you can put a lot of elbow grease into it.

aluminum foil and windex, seems to take it off with minimual effort, have tried the easy off but my apron seems to get in the way

I carry "Road Rub - a chrome cleaning stick". It is about an ounce sized stick (like a solid anti-persperant). Reminds me of a really soft eraser.

I'll use it on cool or cold pipes, but I haven't tried on hot pipes (I think the directons say no on using on hot pipes).
