The sound goes away, another one thinking lifters.Years ago we used to make slight adjustments to keep the clatter away,or simply go to solids.

Bike is an 09 Ultra with 14,000 miles and just came off an 800 mile trip, parked it and started it up again this morning. Big sound from the engine like NO OIL which I had already checked and was fine. Took it 3 miles to stop after pulling off slowly. Stopped an hour for dinner and done the same thing. Im thinking something with the valves...any suggestions or experiences before I take it to the dealer would be appreciated.

Does the clatter go away completely after the engine is warmed up?

Thumbs up

The clatter will go away after it warms up, say about 3-4 miles of easy riding and short shifting. im afraid to rev it too much. Sounds like its gonna come apart at first, Im gonna make an appt at the dealer tomorrow. We will see and I will post after we find out whats wrong. Its still under warranty. Thanks for all the replys fellows. This forum is a big help.

sounds like mine, I had 15,000 on mine and had to replace the lifters(warranty) It was still noisey and I quit using synthetic oil and went with RotellaT. No more problems . I've got over 60,000 on it now. the Rotella really quited my engine down. Don't wanna start an (OIL) fight, just relating my solution.

Post To the Dealer & Back

Took the HOG to the dealer for the noise in the engine. Apparently had been sitting up and weather has been cold here, bike just takes a while to warm up and the lifters and valves clatter alot when that cold. Bike runs fine and seems to be ok after warmup. Tech said to ride it and have it service at 15 k. Mentioned some vibrations and noise in the front and they warranted the front tire. My dealer is Blue Ridge HD in Hickory NC and they do a fine job for me.
Thanks to all of you for all the comments on my thread.

Sounds like a faulty lifter and your dealer is throwing you under the bus! My bike has never sounded like what you describe when cold, and cold here in Michigan is COLD.
Unless you're over reacting on the noise, I'd find a different dealer.
