Well, on my 09 Fat Bob I am noticing a new noise when shifting gears. A local mechanic says it may be the compensator. My normal shift technique is to lift the shifter into the next gear then give a little throttle as I release the clutch. I've always done it that way and I'm thinking so does everyone else. Well, what I am hearing now is the initial (normal) clunck of the gear change and as I release the clutch fully there is a second clunck, almost as if slack in the drive train is being taken up. If after the gear change, I release the clutch fully and give no throttle until the full release the noise is not there. Opinions?

Not saying that it isn't compensator noise, but I recently had issues with mine on my 2010 FLHTCU. I wasn't getting a clunk, I was getting a sound like ball bearings in a beer can when accelerating from a stop in 1st, and a bit less when letting out the clutch from 1st to 2nd.
Took it in and the dealer cranked down on it, all better now.
Tech has good point, it could also be clutch basket.
Recomend take it to shop and have them open primary up to repair.
But you can also do it yourself if you want to go for it.... I say shop first if you feel you might bite off more than you can chew. If your not messing with it.... time line might put this inside warranty.
